It May Be April Fool’s Day, But Fire Is No Joke

Queenslanders are urged to be smart about their safety this April Fool’s Day and change their home’s smoke alarm batteries.
Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) Deputy Commissioner Mark Roche said it was important that residents took the time to ensure their smoke alarms were working. “It only takes a few minutes to change your smoke alarm batteries and test the alarms, but it could save your life,” Mr Roche said.

“Working smoke alarms let you know if there is a fire and maximise your chance of getting out of your home in time. They also help to minimise damage to your property by giving you an early warning so that you can call Triple Zero (000).” Mr Roche said research had shown working smoke alarms more than halved the risk of death in a house fire.

“The danger presented by fire is real. In the past 12 months, QFES attended more than 1,900 residential fires across the state,” he said.
“Tragically, during that time, 18 people died in residential fires in Queensland.”
Mr Roche said along with working smoke alarms, it was essential for Queenslanders to have a home fire escape plan. “You may only have a few minutes from when you hear your smoke alarm to when your life is in danger from fire or smoke,” he said.  “That’s why it’s so important for all members of your household to prepare and practise an escape plan.”
QFES recommends the use of photoelectric smoke alarms. “Photoelectric alarms are more effective at detecting a wider range of fires,” Mr Roche said. “If your alarms are powered by nine volt batteries, you need to put in a new battery every year. If you have hard-wired alarms, check your back-up batteries are working in case there’s a power outage.”
“The message is clear. Don’t be a fool this April 1st. Check your smoke alarms today.”

The 16th FE-FC Holden Nationals in Toowoomba Over Easter

The 16th FE-FC Holden Nationals will be held in Toowoomba Queensland, 25-28 March 2016. This will be the second time the Nats have been staged in the Sunshine State, and the FE-FC Holden Car Club of Queensland look forward to hosting FE and FC enthusiasts from all around Australia.

The FE – FC Holden nationals are held every two years over the Easter long weekend. The FE – FC Holden car clubs of Australia take turns to host the event. The Queensland-based club will be staging this year’s Nationals, and they’ve chosen to hold them  in Toowoomba.

The previous event was held in Hobart, Tasmania over Easter 2014.

The Nationals always comprises a public “show ‘n’ shine” event, a cruise around and through the hosting city or town,  several official       dinners and other events. It is a full weekend of entertainment that is centred around the FE and FC Holden vehicles, but includes activities that suit the whole family. The Nationals prides itself on being a social event, not just the car show.

Easter Weekend, Toowoomba

Friday 25/3/16

Registration at Nationals Headquarters (Darling Downs Vintage & Veteran Car Club -DDVVMC), between 10am †4.30pm.
There is a short cruise to Picnic Point for lunch, starting at 11.30am, with lunch from 12.30pm

Friday Night 26/3/16

The traditional fish and chips meet and greet dinner will be held at Nats HQ.  Tea and Coffee will also be available, and a bar will be open for drinks.

Saturday 26/3/16

The Nationals Show and Shine will be held in Queens Park (Entrant access to the park is via Hume Street), 8am †9am setup. Show Time for the public is between 9am and 4pm

Saturday Night 26/3/16

6pm †11pm Dinner and Rock & Roll night at Nats HQ.
Dinner served from 7pm, bar open from 6pm.

Sunday 27/3/16

Gather at Nats HQ for a Car Run & Sports day leaving Nats HQ at 10am, travelling in convoy out past the new airport (Brisbane West Wellcamp) to Pittsworth Pioneer Village where lunch will be provided.

Sports events will be held on the grounds, along with a tour of the Pioneer Village.

Return to Toowoomba at leisure once games are concluded

Sunday Night 27/3/16

Dinner at Nats HQ – Bar opens at 6pm, followed by Dinner at 7pm.

Following the meal there will be the presentation of trophies.

Each Thursday the Empire Theatre front lawns come alive with local farmers and producers showcasing the regions beautiful fresh produce and artisan food products. The lawns are filled with farmers, locals, live music and kids, all enjoying a ‘traditional’ way to buy your weekly groceries and becoming and engaging with the broader community.

Farmers’ market organiser, Josie Townsend said, “We have had families come here and connect and then come back each week for their children to play together. Some of our stallholders have also created long-lasting relationships with some of the professionals in town who pop in for their shopping and stay for a glass of wine and some music.”

Each week a FREE food gift is given away. This week it is a 1kg bag of Gala apples, pears or Nashi pears from our Stanthorpe Apples stand. The Giacosa family have been farming in the Granite Belt for generations and are happy to be a part of the “My Local Feast Farmers’ Markets”.  Anthony Giacosa says.

“We came along before Christmas to see what these markets were about and we love them. We even have people pre-ordering produce from us which they pick up from us at the markets. The stallholders all love it; we are becoming an extended family. The atmosphere is great. Mum and dad come one week and my wife and I do the alternate week, it works really well.”

The markets also host a kids’ food activitiy each week called, “Kids in the Kitchen”, led by Kids’ Cook Pete Townsend (no relation to the drummer of The Who or Princess Margaret).
This week kids will be decorating  Jalbirri Goo Gums hard boiled eggs with painting and food construction.

The markets host stall holders from cheese makers, free range egg growers, beef, pork and turkey producers, honey, Russian biscuits, artisan bakers, chutney and fermented foods, fresh pasta and sauces made by well-known local identity †Angelo formerly from Angelo’s Restaurant, mueslis, the markets are full of great produce and products perfect for the Easter long weekend.

16th Annual “High Altitude Hot Rod Run – 2016 Show ‘n’ Shine”

• Sunday March 13, 2016 will see the 16th annual Toowoomba Hot Rodders High Altitude Hotrod Run Show ‘n’ Shine.
• The Show ‘n’ Shine is on from 9am †12noon.
• The venue this year is in the carpark behind Cobb+Co Museum.
• While the venue is different to previous years, the sights and the sounds will be the same †great cars and great music from the live band, “Rock Steady”. (Bring along your dancing shoes!)
• Up to 100 hotrods and custom cars will be on display.
• Hotrod enthusiasts come from across Queensland and northern New South Wales, bringing a wide range of quality cars of all makes, shapes and colours to Toowoomba.

• The Show ‘n’ Shine gives the public a chance to get up close to the cars and admire the finer details and amount of work that has gone into them.
• There will also be a number of trade stands, market and food stalls and a jumping castle.
• The public can vote for their favourite car.

HOTRODS HEADING TO CLIFTON ON SATURDAY

Toowoomba Hot Rodders Club Inc is holding its 16th annual “High Altitude Hot Rod Run” over the weekend 11 †13th March, 2016.
One of the activities organised as part of that weekend is a ‘run’ out to Clifton this Saturday, 12th March. Over 50 hotrods will make their way from Toowoomba to Clifton, via Wyreema, Cambooya, Greenmount and Nobby. While at Clifton, run entrants will visit the New Tivoli Picture Theatre and the Clifton Historical Museum.
The hotrods will be parked in the grounds of Pursehouse Rural and towards the Museum.
The public is welcome to come along and wander around the cars. There will be a limited number of run shirts available for purchase also.
If you miss seeing them in Clifton, the hotrods will also be on display in Toowoomba, as part of the High Altitude Hot Rod Show ‘n’ Shine. This event is being held in the carpark behind Cobb+Co Museum in Toowoomba, from 9am †noon on Sunday, 13th March. As well as lots of great cars, there will be great music by the live band, Rock Steady, trade stands and other stalls, food and coffee available. Entry is free to the public.

Fashion Parade For Queensland State Rose Garden

Friends of the Queensland State Rose Garden in Newtown Park, Toowoomba are hoping  the attendance will will fill the Rose Cottage Hall for their Portofino Fashion Parade on Saturday afternoon 12th March, 2016. Besides the fashions, they will be putting on a “home made” afternoon tea with a large selection of both savoury and sweet delicacies to be enjoyed.

The Friends are very grateful for a donation of 200 Heritage Rose bushes, and are raising funds to create new beds for these plants when they take delivery in 2017.
