Hampton Festival 2016 has arrived!  We hope to see you this Sunday, May 15 from 9.30am as we celebrate all that makes our region so very special.  From live cooking demonstrations and music to food, wine and art – this Sunday will have something of appeal for all.

“Mini” Toowoomba Open House For 2016

Men's UrinalTo mark the date change from October to May this year features a mini event as a Date Claimer, before returning in full on Sunday 28 May 2017.  Start early on Sunday 22 May with a visit to our information hub at the heritage listed Russell Street Men’s Toilet, open from 9.45am.

It is rare that both women and men have the opportunity to view inside this tiny structure so don’t miss this chance.  Come and learn more about just what makes this building so special and why it was important enough to justify its careful dismantling and reconstruction as part of the creek flood mitigation work..

As the oldest known existing public urinal in Queensland, this small building packs a punch in the stories it could tell.  Constructed in 1919, it offers evidence of the development of public health in early 20th century Queensland.  There are probably many a tale that could be told by nearby revellers and travellers from the nearby Railway Station †if you have one come along and share it with our volunteers on the day!

David Hack Classic Meet On Sunday May 1st, 2016

The Toowoomba North Rotary Club’s main fundraiser each year is the David Hack Classic Meet, being held again on Sunday May 1st 2016. Activity is centred around the Aerotec Hangar at Toowoomba City Airport – the home of the famous Zuccoli Aircraft Collection.

This year’s David Hack Classic Meet features an exotic mix of classic, vintage and modern cars, historic trucks , military vehicles, racing cars and motor bikes and a Fly-in of warbirds and classic planes. The featured aircraft for 2016 is a SIAI-Marchetti S211 Jet Trainer and vehicle, the Bandag Bullet – a true tyre torture machine and the test for Bandag’s cold process retreads. The truck has twin V8 diesels, each engine has 2 turbo’s and supercharger producing over 2000HP.
David Hack Flyer 2016 v030316 (FINAL Rev 1)There are visitors raffles with great prizes  including a warbird flight and V8 Supercar laps at the Ipswich Raceway. Catering is on-site with hamburgers, chips, tea/coffee, sandwiches, cakes and soft drinks available all day.

The event is open to the public from8.30am to 2.30pm, raising much needed funds for the Leukaemia Foundation, Blue Care, Careflight and other local charities. Admission is $15 for adults, children under 12 FREE and the Family price is capped at $40 for 2 adults and teenagers.

Young People From Across The Region Audition For ‘Annie’.

This Sunday, 95 aspiring young thespians will vie for a role in the Toowoomba Choral Society’s major production of the year, Annie.

Young people from across the Toowoomba region will display their performance talent during the audition, hoping to secure a prized spot in the musical, which will be held at the Empire Theatre from 9 †11 September.

Based on Little Orphan Annie, the popular comic strip by Harold Gray, Annie has become a worldwide sensation and is one of the most loved musicals of all time. Winner of seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical, the beloved show features a wonderful score written by Charles Strouse and Martin Charnin, including the Broadway smash hit, ‘Tomorrow’, as well as ‘It’s a Hard Knocked Life’, ‘Easy Street’, ‘Little Girls’ and ‘I Don’t Need Anything But You’.

With a perfect combination of street-smarts and optimism, Annie warms the hearts of the audience as we witness her rise from next-to-nothing in New York City. She is determined to find her parents, who left her at the orphanage years ago. Though things don’t quite work out the way she has planned, she does manage to thwart the plans of the evil Miss Hannigan and find a new family with billionaire Oliver Warbucks, his secretary Grace Farrell, and her lovable pooch, Sandy.

The Toowoomba Choral Society stages two major productions each year. Into the Woods will be held 9-12 June at the Armitage Centre followed by Annie at the Empire Theatre from 9-11 September.

East Toowoomba business Blooming Gorgeous has been named Champion Florist for 2016 at the Australian Small Business Champion Awards held at The Westin in Sydney at the weekend (Saturday, April 23).

Blooming Gorgeous had steep competition, with more than 1200 entries received from florists all over Australia. The Australian Small Business Champion Awards offer national recognition for Australian small businesses, aiming to encourage high standards of excellence in small business practice. Saturday’s red carpet event was attended by more than 1000 guests. Small businesses from around Australia entered this year’s awards, representing a broad range of industries from all states and territories.

“The Australian Small Business Champion Awards is a way to recognise the efforts of small business people whose efforts contribute to the prosperity and vitality of communities across Australia,” said Steve Loe, Managing Director of Precedent Productions. Loe founded the awards in 1999 with the company, a small business in its own right, to celebrate the vital importance of small business in Australia, and their achievements.

“As a small business owner myself, I know the vision and dedication to excellence required to succeed. These traits have been displayed in abundance by all of our 2016 business champions.”

Blooming Gorgeous has been the recipient of numerous awards including the Heritage Bank Business Excellence Awards and 2015 Downs Woman of Merit Award for Director Sally Harvey. Celebrating their 10th year of business, the florist has been brightening residents’ special occasions in Toowoomba and around the country since 2006.

CPEA Nearly New Sale An Opportunity To Sell

CPEA is a not-for-profit organisation and has been running since 1974 with the help of volunteer mothers. Over the years CPEA has offered the opportunity for parents to meet other parents and to make new friends. CPEA organises a number of activities that are open for all to join. This includes our weekly Hopscotch Playgroup, monthly Mums, Bubs and Toddlers Coffee Mornings and Mother’s Night Out.  We help to fund and make these events affordable to our members through our Nearly New Sale which is held several times each year.

The ‘Nearly New Sale’ is held from 9am-1pm at the Toowoomba Community Baptist Church, 100 Glenvale Road, Glenvale. Entry is $2 per person and free for children. There will be quality preloved maternity clothes, nursery equipment and toys, books and clothing for newborns to 5 year olds and also features other market stalls.
