0

Mayor of the Toowoomba Regional Council, Peter Taylor, will be taking a leading role in the Leukaemia Foundation of Queensland’s special Light the Night event at sunset this Thursday.

Residents from throughout the Darling Downs are expected to attend the twilight event to raise awareness of the impact on people’s lives of leukaemias, lymphomas, myeloma and related blood disorders.

Light the Night will be held from 5pm this Thursday at Frogs Hollow in Queens Park, Toowoomba.

Cr Taylor will officially welcome visitors from throughout the region and also lead a short walk during which participants Light the Night by carrying gold, white or blue illuminated balloons:

* gold balloons to remember a loved one lost

* white balloons to celebrate being a survivor

* blue balloons to give hope and show support.

This year a total of 11 centres across the state are staging the event at which people can remember loved ones lost to blood cancers, celebrate being a survivor and give hope to patients and their families. The inspiring and uplifting event’s growing popularity has resulted in another three walks being held at Rockhampton, Port Douglas and Caboolture centres in addition to the existing locations in Brisbane, Bundaberg, Cairns, Gold Coast, Mackay, Sunshine Coast, Toowoomba and Townsville.

The Leukaemia Foundation’s Regional Community Fundraiser for Darling Downs and South West Queensland, Phoebe Mitchell, said Light the Night was first held in Toowoomba last year and this year’s event was again expected to be a moving and inspiring evening.

Light the Night is an opportunity to support those whose lives have been touched by blood cancers,” she said. It is also a chance for the community to show its support for the work of the Leukaemia Foundation.”

Phoebe says it is not too late to sign up to attend Light the Night by visiting www.lightthenight.org.au or calling 1800 500 088.

Call for Darling Downs Ambassadors to join Fundraising Quest

The Leukaemia Foundation of Queensland is seeking energetic, innovative and dedicated people across the state willing to meet the challenge of raising money in their local community as part of the Foundation’s fundraising Quest.

The Foundation’s Regional Community Fundraiser for Toowoomba/Darling Downs and South West Queensland, Phoebe Mitchell, said she is now recruiting potential Quest ambassadors for the fundraising program running until 24 June 2011.

Ms Mitchell said anyone — male or female — contemplating becoming a Quest ambassador should be aged between 12 and 85 as at 25 June this year.

All you need are bright ideas and lots of energy for raising funds. Previous ambassadors have organised events including fashion parades, lunches, golf days, school disco dances, and activities including raffles, charity auctions, chocolate sales — the list goes on and the only limiting factor is your imagination,” she said.

Being a Quest ambassador is a very direct and satisfying way to support the Leukaemia Foundation and the patients and families it assists every day.”

Ms Mitchell said the Quest was one of the Foundation’s major fundraising events.

The Quest has been held every year since 1983 and in that time has raised an estimated $27 million for the Leukaemia Foundation,” she said. The money raised is directed towards helping patients and their families and funding medical research projects.”

Quest ambassadors can compete for three awards:

• the Leukaemia Foundation of Queensland President’s Award for highest fundraiser

• ESA International Award – second highest fundraiser

• Spirit of the Foundation Award.

The President’s Award winner will have the opportunity to have a Leukaemia Foundation 12-month research grant or fellowship named in their honour, or in the name of someone they nominate.

Ms Mitchell said the Top 5 fundraising ambassadors in the state will be invited to attend a Quest recognition event in July 2011. The Quest finishing in June this year raised more than $109,000 for the Foundation across the state.

Footballers to Frolic in the Gardens

The community is invited to enjoy market stalls, live music, food and friendship at the second annual Dalby Rugby Union Garden Day in the grounds of historic Jimbour House this Saturday October 2. The Dalby Wheatmen have hung up their boots for the season and have been out helping Jimbour Station Manager Carl Graham and event organiser Anne Condon prepare for the big day.

Mrs Condon said she was expecting this year’s event to be even bigger and better than last year which had been hosted at the Condon family property. We are really excited to have a different venue this year to keep the crowd interested and it is such a privilege to have the event at such a beautiful location.”

This venue is definitely a crowd pleaser and we have secured around 20 different quality market stalls featuring all kinds of wares from arts and crafts, gardening, fashion and beauty, jewellery and delicious cakes and sweets, so we’re expecting a great turn out,” she said.

A BBQ and bar will be operating throughout the day and there will be a lucky door prize of a pressure pump valued at $1,000 kindly donated by Water Dynamics – the major sponsor of this year’s event.

Dalby Rugby Union players Craig McVeigh and Michael Gall in training for the garden day at Jimbour House.

Carl Graham said the event offered a great day for all the family to visit the historic property. There is nothing like visiting the Jimbour House gardens in spring. JImbour House has been a centerpiece of the local community for over 130 years and the gardens were built for people. The place just comes alive with people and I’m sure the garden day will be no exception”.

Mrs Condon and Mr Graham said the event would not be possible without the wonderful support of sponsors Water Dynamics, Johnsons of Dalby and Total Ag Services. Proceeds from the garden day will go towards the redevelopment of the Dalby Rugby Union Clubhouse and facilities.

Jimbour House is located just outside of Jimbour, approximately 34 kilometres from Dalby along the Dalby -Jandowae Road. Entry is $5 for adults. Children under 15 are free.

Minister and Member Drop In On Tenants

0

Member for Toowoomba North Kerry Shine and Housing Minister Karen Struthers have visited tenants who have been living in a new social housing development completed in May.

Mr Shine said the eight, two bedroom apartments in Wilsonton were built using funds from the federal government’s stimulus package and had been a great help to tenants looking to get back on their feet.

He said the $1.7 million project had provided a safe and secure place to live for people doing it tough and generated jobs in the local construction industry.

Here in the Darling Downs region, we saw a 28% downturn in the construction industry between August 2008 and April this year,” Mr Shine said. This project alone generated 15 jobs during that time. Across the Toowoomba area, we invested more than $25 million from the federal government and the state government in the last financial year to build social housing. All up, that supported almost 190 jobs. The investment has been a real lifeline to the local construction industry”.

Hon. Karen Struthers (Minister for Community Services and Housing, and Minister for Women) and Member for Toowoomba North Kerry Shine outside the $1.7 million project of 8 two bedroom apartments in Wilsonton.

Mr Shine went on to say The great thing about this project here is that half of the units can be adapted to meet the access requirements of people with a disability. Two of the units are semi-adaptable and two are fully wheelchair adaptable”.

Ms Struthers said Queensland could expect to see more than 4000 new social housing dwellings by June 2012 under the federal government program.

The help people receive from social housing is very significant when it’s added up,” Ms Struthers said. When you add in other concessions, it works out to be about an average of about $14,500 a year in assistance that social housing tenants receive”.
