Wagners Say Airport Community Open Day Attended By Over 27,000

Wellcamp Open Day
More than 27,304 Queenslanders flocked to Brisbane West Wellcamp Airport (BWWA)  to see 2014 IndyCar champ Will Power race a Cessna Mustang Citation jet down the newly-completed 2.87 kilometre runway.

The local Toowoomba boy specially flew back to Australia to celebrate the airport’s community open day on Sunday, September 28th. Beaten once by the jet in the  morning, Will put the pedal to the metal in his second race to beat the jet at the post. “I’ve never raced a jet before so it was very exciting,” says Will, Australia’s first ever IndyCar champion.

The free event was the last chance for the community to preview Australia’s newest airport before it goes operational later this year, with QantasLink services starting on 17th  November.

Wagners’ director and event organiser John Wagner said the response from the community was amazing, with the new terminal a particular highlight. “We’re really thankful to everyone who made the effort to visit us, and particularly to the 300 volunteers who helped make the event such a great success,” Mr Wagner said “It was fantastic to see the airport so busy with almost 20 different aircraft on the ground, a sure sign of things to come.”

Other highlights included aerial shows, helicopter joy flights, terminal and runway tours, performances by local bands and country singer Amber Lawrence and appearances by celebrity MCs Natalie Gruzlewski and Tim Horan.

More than 18,000 people attended the airport’s ‘under construction’ open day held in November last year. Located near Toowoomba Queensland, Brisbane West Wellcamp Airport is the first greenfield public airport built in Australia in 50 years and the nation’s first privately funded public airport.

Money, Money, Money!

Toowoomba Detectives are advising local business operators to be aware of a recent spate of counterfeit $50 and $100 notes being presented for payment of goods. In most instances business operators are only becoming aware of their acceptance of these counterfeit notes when the banking is being prepared.

Investigators encourage business operators to be vigilant and if in doubt record vehicle registration numbers and personal particulars of suspect persons who may be attempting to pass these counterfeit notes. Such details and CCTV footage prove invaluable when identifying and prosecuting offenders.

The perpetrators of these crimes may target businesses during high customer flow or busy periods, when a console operator’s attention may be easily distracted.

Detectives at Dalby and Ipswich have recently arrested a number of persons for like offences but investigators believe the counterfeit notes continue to circulate within our community. Business owners are encouraged to visit The Reserve Bank of Australia website and the Australian Federal Police website, which provides valuable information in relation to counterfeit currency topics and outlines the security features of Australian Currency

2014 Toowoomba Carnival Of Flowers Underway

Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers is a 10-day celebration to showcase stunning gardens, fine wines, exceptional  regional produce, inspired fashion & arts and a musical lineup of national headline acts. Toowoomba, known nationally as Australia’s ‘Garden City’ is set high on the Great Dividing Range, 127 kms west of Brisbane.

Toowoomba Region Mayor Paul Antonio said the Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers was Australia’s longest running horticultural event for good reason †because, like a good garden, it continued to  evolve and nurture new elements, new areas and new experiences.  “This is one of the most exciting programs we have ever staged,” he said. “The event once again successfully combines fashion with gardens, music with food; and shines the light on the paddock to plate movement. Most importantly this event has our local community at heart as it did back when it all began 65 years ago.”

The 2014 Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers features more than 17 major  events (and a multitude of community arranged events), across 21 venues, starring 130 performers, including 5 chefs, headlined by Alive and Cooking’s Chef James Reeson  along with ABC TV Gardening Australia’s Gardening Guru Josh Byrne.  Musically the Heritage Bank Live program (staged in the E rgon Energy Flower, Food and Wine Festival precinct in Queens Park) wants for nothing – Australian legends ICEHOUSE and Deborah Conway headline an all-star lineup including 90’s star rock band Something for Kate and Australian breakthrough bands The Kite String Tangle, Saskwatch and San Cisco as well as music and dance sensations Justice Crew among others!! Dorothy the Dinosaur is even making star appearances!

The lead event, the inaugural Mayoral Gala Dinner on Thursday, 18th September was a five-course degustation menu under the stars in the Arbour in Upper Queens Park. Diners also enjoyed a preview of the winning entries in the Floral Art Design competition and the  launch of the Culture to Couture fashions.

The floral masterpieces on show in The Chronicle Home Garden Competition, the exhibition gardens and the city’s civic parks remain a spectacular drawcard right through Spring – this year’s Grand Champion gardeners are  Kevin and Dianna Drew of’ ‘Kevanna’, 17 Ward Street, Highfields whilst Cheryl and Kelly Fry have the Reserve Champion Garden at 21 Dallang Road, Middle Ridge. These and a number of Exhibition Gardens are open for charity during the Carnival of Flowers from Friday 19th to Sunday, 28th September. Details of all organised garden tours, including the hop-on, hop-off bus and the morning and afternoon guided tours available may be booked online at www.tcof.com.au or by calling Stonestreet’s Coaches on 4687 5555.

The crowd-pleasing highlight of the Carnival is the Grand Central Floral Parade from 3pm on Saturday, 20th September – the single event that unites and inspires the thousands who line the streets to witness its colour and pageantry. This year’s theme is “A Storybook of Colour.

The parade will be led by towering, life-size, animatronic dinosaurs walking with the stars of Star Wars, beside Little Red Riding  Hood, alongside rollerbladers and fairies to the spine-tingling sounds of a Celtic Band amidst a stunning  lineup of fresh floral floats, flanked by stiltwalkers, street performers and carnival characters!  Each of almost 80 entries in this year’s parade have interpreted the theme their own special way, some have opted to tell their own individual story, others have adopted characters from famous nursery rhymes. The Grand Central Floral Parade will wend its spectacular way through the heart of Toowoomba’s CBD to the Godsall Street Oval in Queens Park.

*Ticketing details for the Ergon Energy Flower, Food and Wine Festival, including the Heritage Bank Live Concert Series, can be found at www.tcof.com.au  Patrons this year can upgrade to a platinum ticket package which offers access to a marquee with private bathrooms, seated views of the performance stage and a cash bar. The daily $120 platinum package also includes a complimentary drink and a meal from any of the festival outlets.

Shakespearean Inspiration For The Southern Cross Soloists

SAY what you might about William Shakespeare, but this was a guy who loved his music. As he wrote in Twelfth Night “If music be the food of love, play on, Give me excess of it.”

No less passionate was he about those who did not share his love of music.

The Bard therefore would no doubt appreciate that music will be a highlight of the upcoming Artsworx Shakespeare Festival at the University of Southern Queensland during October; an annual festival that celebrates his legacy through theatre, performance and art.

One of the featured musical items will be a recital of Shakespeare-inspired music by the Southern Cross Soloists, one of Australia’s most successful and internationally respected chamber ensembles. The repertoire they will perform on the evening will include the Purcell Overture from Timon of Athens, Schubert’s Hark, hark the lark and Who is Silvia, Ophelia Songs by Brahms, Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet selections, Andrew Ford’s Shakespeare Songs, and Cole Porter’s Kiss me Kate selections.

The Soloists †comprising seven of Australia’s most accomplished musicians †pride themselves on approaching every performance as a unique opportunity to make a meaningful and lasting impression on the people who matter: the audience members – it is a philosophy that matches well with that of the Artsworx Shakespeare Festival.

Now in its 11th year, the festival has grown to become a highlight on the community’s cultural calendar.

The festival aims to hold broad appeal while still offering deeper insights into one of the world’s best-loved playwrights. The performance by the Southern Cross Soloists is sure to offer those insights, with the ensemble focused on creating something special and “in the moment” every time they perform. The informal, ‘up-close-and-personal’ performance style perfected by the Soloists creates an intimate, inviting and deeply engaging experience which Shakespeare would no doubt have enjoyed very much.
SouthernCrossSoloistsThe Southern Cross Soloists will perform as part of the Artsworx Twilight series on Wednesday, October 1, from 6pm-7pm in the USQ Arts Theatre. Tickets cost $22 for adults ($18 concession, $15 students, and $10 children) and include a post-show reception with the chance to meet the artists.
Further information and tickets are available from the Artsworx box office on 07 4631 1111 or online artsworx.com.au
