Exoplanet Rings In New Year Every Five Days

Spinning into the future:
University of Southern Queensland researcher leads discovery of a hot Jupiter exoplanet with fast orbit

While we have just welcomed the start of a new year, millions of lightyears away, a newly discovered exoplanet celebrates the occasion every few days. After receiving information from NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), University of Southern Queensland researchers set their sights and telescopes on a new potential exoplanet, TOI-778 b.

Having identified its planetary features, the team learned TOI-778 b revolved around a rapidly spinning dwarf star, completing a full orbit in under five days. Although a land of many new years might sound appealing, the planet’s size and close proximity to its star have seen it classified as a hot Jupiter, a giant planet with scorching temperatures.

Leading the project was University of Southern Queensland astrophysicist Dr Jake Clark. It was pretty difficult to pin down and confirm that TOI-778 b was a planet in the first place,” Dr Clark said. We received a signal from the TESS telescope to say that there could be a planet orbiting this star.”

But as we took preliminary data, we noticed that the parent star was spinning super-fast on its axis – about 40 kilometres a second, which is 4 times the speed needed to launch rockets into space.” Learning more about the exoplanet was no easy feat, as the speed of the dwarf star’s rotation smeared out” the planet’s signals.

Dr Clark said a range of measurements were needed to confirm TOI-778 b’s existence. Thankfully, the best thing about being at UniSQ is having our very own observatory up at Mount Kent, where we can take a multitude of observations to slowly get the imprint of the planet off from the star’s spectrum,” he said.

We weren’t able to just make sure that the planet was there, but we were even able to measure the tilt of the planet’s orbit, relative to its star.” This information gave the scientists an insight into the planet’s formation and how it came to be in the orbit of a dwarf star.

With our observations, we were able to work out that TOI-778 b would have formed millions of kilometres away from its current location, slowly creeping into its current orbit, circling around its star every five Earth-days,” Dr Clark said. We’re still trying to work out how these planets form and how they manage to get into these really close orbits, but it’s awesome research that we’re currently looking into here at UniSQ.”

Dr Clark said his research at UniSQ had helped him to fulfil a lifelong dream. Ever since I was an undergraduate student, one of my biggest aspirations was to lead the discovery of another world,” he said. To be able to do that in a team of over 60 people all around the globe, including those that inspired me to purse a PhD in astrophysics in the first place, is honestly a dream come true.”

Queens Park Lights Up New Year’s Eve

Toowoomba residents and visitors to the region will have plenty to enjoy this New Year’s Eve with a fantastic fireworks display again lighting up Queens Park.

Toowoomba Region Mayor Paul Antonio said the fireworks display would again be free and held at the family friendly timeslot of 8.15pm on Saturday night. We encourage families to get out and celebrate the end of 2022 with a fireworks display at Queens Park.

‘While there will be no prior live entertainment again this year, we encourage families to grab some dinner at their favourite local eatery and bring a picnic rug to Queens Park for the 8.15pm display.

The New Year’s Eve fireworks is a much-loved family tradition and Council is proud to provide this free entertainment to celebrate the end of the year and to ring in the New Year with a bang,” Mayor Antonio said.

Attendees are encouraged to arrive early to secure a parking spot nearby for the fireworks display from the Godsall Street Oval section of Queens Park in Toowoomba.

Australia In Space Exhibition

Discover out-of-this-world science and technology at Cobb+Co Museum’s new exhibition Australia in Space now on display. This exciting, hands-on experience reveals the ways that Australian innovations are used in space, and the surprising benefits space technologies bring to everyday life here on Earth.

Earth & Beyond

Discover how Australia’s location and expertise give us a unique advantage in space. Be inspired by stories of how Australian innovators are using space technologies to improve life on Earth, and how Earth observations from space are transforming the ways we live and work.

Your Book Launch Invitation

I hope you will join us on what will be a very historic occasion for the launch of the first book ever published on the history of the drivers of the Cobb & Co horse-drawn coaches.  It was written by local author Hazel Johnson and this is the third in a sequence about Cobb & Co.

To the best of my knowledge, the last attempt to write a similar publication was made by the late Mr Bill Bolton MBE in his role as Managing Director of Cobb & Co in 1960. There have been other attempts to write similar books previously, however I am unaware of any published before now.

On Thursday 1st December 2022, Jim Thompson, CEO of Queensland Museum will officially launch Hazel’s book at the Cobb & Co Museum Toowoomba. This 200 page book contains information on some 700 drivers, including females, as well as photographs.

A summary of Hazel’s previous publications follows for your easy reference:

The first was titled Along the tracks of Cobb & Co – The Northern Road (Tenterfield to Maryland) released in 2021, and the second some twelve months later which was titled  Along the tracks of Cobb & Co – The Western Run (Brisbane, Toowoomba, Roma & Charleville).

Thanks for your interest and I hope to see you on December 1st at 11.30 am at Cobb+Co Museum, 27 Lindsay Street, Toowoomba. Light refreshments will be on offer after the launch.

Meanwhile should you have any queries please call me.

Toowoomba’s Christmas Wonderland is proudly presented by the Lions Club of Toowoomba West, and it takes thousands of volunteer hours to set up the event, open nightly and pack up.

Project Chairman, Lion Marshall Cox, is calling on the generous people of the Toowoomba area to come and help with this year’s event. In previous years we have relied on the generous people of Toowoomba to help us with this fantastic family event and this year is no different,” he said.

I’m asking anyone who would like to help bring the joy of Christmas to our community to go to our website and register as a volunteer.  Your assistance will be greatly appreciated, and you get to work with like-minded locals.”
