Don’t Miss Visiting The Camellia Show Winter Garden

Rangeville’s “Stirling” was officially announced as the Toowoomba Camellia Show and Garden Expo’s “Winter Garden” at a ceremony on Friday, 30th June.

Group at Winter Garden Announcement -l to r Hospice chairman, Graham Barron, Greg Johnson. Kevin Cotterell, garden co-owner Colin Fitzgerald, Jan Johnson (Heritage Bank, Cr Nancy Sommerfield, Rusell Campbell, and Cr Joe Ramia

“Stirling” is the proud home of popular gardeners Dr Viola Nicolson and Colin Fitzgerald and sits at 32 Leslie Street, Rangeville. It was previously known as “Manooka” however Viola and Colin renamed it in honour of the Stirling family who lived there for many years.

The garden comprises two acres of magnificent flora including, naturally, 100 camellia plants, 300 rose bushes and 100 trees of the world. Mr Fitzgerald said, “Viola and I are honoured to open our garden to garden lovers from across Australia on the weekend of 15 and 16 July.

“We’ve been working on the garden for months trying to get it in the very best shape we can despite the dry conditions we’ve faced.

Nevertheless, we are sure visitors will love it as we do particularly if we’re lucky enough to strike the warm winter weather Toowoomba’s experienced in the last few weeks.”

“Stirling” is a maze of nature’s beauty with long winding bluestone paths, manicured lawns, lavender walkways as well as features including sundials, natural walls and relaxing places.

Show President Kevin Cotterell said, “Talking to Colin and Viola is like listening to an audio encyclopaedia on flora as they rattle off a never ending list of precious trees including English Oaks, Pin Oaks, Red Oaks, Magnolia Denudata, Silver and Golden Elms, Japanese Keyaki and the piece de resistance, a legendary Golden Camellia. This is one special place.”

View from “Stirling” – Table Top is at left

Committee member Greg Johnson, who promises again to be at his floral best, said, “For me the striking feature of “Stirling” was the way in which Colin and Viola had effectively “framed” Table Top Mountain with two towering gums †it’s like one giant painting hanging from the sky.”

Toowoomba Hospice’s Mark Munro added, “”Stirling” is a gift from two dedicated gardeners and at only $5 to enter, or just $10 to include both the garden and the Camellia Show, attendance records are in sight. The Hospice sincerely appreciates this magic event. It brings together people who love nature and people who care – the beneficiaries are those people who have come to the end of life’s journey and can do so in a place full of love and caring.

“Sadly this will be the first Winter Garden announcement without our beloved Committee member Rod Hultgren who passed away on Sunday, 25th June. We’ll use the occasion to reflect on Rod’s wonderful, lifelong dedication to gardens and the Camellia Show and Garden Expo.”

‘Budding’ Ballerina Assists With Camellia Show Release

The Toowoomba Camellia Show and Garden Expo Committee has announced the name of a brand new hybrid camellia at Coroneos Nursery, 266 Herries Street, Toowoomba.

A limited quantity of the new ‘Ballerina’ sasanqua will be on sale for the first time during the 2017 Camellia Show, and then from Coroneos Nursery. The Toowoomba Hospice will receive $5 from your purchase of each camellia.

A lovely young ballerina from Dance Central, Phoebe Manthey, posed with sample plants during the Queensland launch and naming occasion.

The Ballerina is an upright and slender shrub, making the variety a perfect choice for that narrow garden bed, against a wall or even an elegant pot. This beautiful camellia is early flowering, producing delicate white formal flowers with light pink edges and a hint of perfume.

Country Culinary Creations For Australia’s Hospitality Creme De La Creme

A handpicked selection of the region’s most sought-after produce will be served to some of Australia’s up and coming hospitality stars on Monday night, July 3rd..

Toowoomba based, award-winning chef Amanda Hinds is creating a three-course Darling Downs inspired menu for young chefs, restaurateurs and waiters participating in this year’s Electrolux Appetite For Excellence Awards (Australia’s only national hospitality awards program).

The culinary experience, which will take place at Wellcamp Airport, will feature a variety of free-range produce exclusive to the region.

Ms Hinds, who is a huge advocate of supporting local farmers, said the menu would provide just a ‘morsel’’ of what’s on offer in the region.

Guests will dine on sorghum, premier 150-day Black Angus Oakey Beef, quail, Lockyer Valley root vegetables, a tribute dish to iconic Sutton’s Farm apples and Queensland’s first truffles of the season, both Granite Belt specialities.

“We have a very different culinary experience unlike anything else in Australia and it’s wonderful to be able to collaborate with Tourism Darling Downs to show the future stars of Australia’s hospitality industry what we have in this rich agricultural heartland,” said Ms Hinds, whose former Bundaberg restaurant, Indulge Café and Bistro was a two-time winner of The Brisbane Times Good Food Guide People’s Choice Award in 2015 and 2016.

Electrolux Appetite For Excellence program director Ms Phee Gardner said every year, participants were taken to a different region to meet and learn from incredible producers, farmers, harvesters and growers. “We are looking forward to coming to Queensland and in particular touring the Oakey Beef Exports (Oakey), Banyard Game Birds (Pittsworth) and Kerwee Feedlot (Jondaryan) while we are on the Darling Downs.

“A very important component of what we want to showcase to the future stars of the culinary world is the importance of creating a sustainable industry for young professionals and the industry alike. This produce tour goes beyond the produce itself and delves into the farmers’ knowledge and science of what they do every day and why Australian produce is so good,” said Ms Gardner.

Department of Agriculture and Fisheries Regional Director Mr Richard Routley said the dinner would provide a great platform to promote the Darling Downs’ high quality beef, grains and horticultural produce to a national audience “The Darling Downs is Australia’s premier agricultural food bowl and it’s great to see our produce receive the recognition and attention it deserves,” said Mr Routley.

About 65 people will attend the industry dinner at the airport, including the 17 award participants and key stakeholders Mary-Jane Morse (Meat and Livestock Australia), Kylie Roberts (Porkstars) and Pat Gleeson (Oakey Beef Exports). Event supporters include Wellcamp Airport, Banyard Quail, Paddock to Potager, Suttons Cidery, 9Dorf, The Barefoot Baker, Stahmann Farms, Combined Farmers of the Lockyer Valley, Mac Foods Toowoomba and George the Truffle Man.

*The Electrolux Appetite For Excellence application process started in January and culminates in the crowning of the young chef, young waiter and young restaurateur of the year 2017 at a star-studded awards night in Noosa on August 14.

Ladies Day Makes A Difference…

Whilst the ladies sipped champagne and watched their men get tackled, $5,000 was raised to support the Toowoomba Hospice Adopt A Room Campaign.

Event Organiser, Ms Teagan Killen said Ladies Day for Toowoomba Rangers Rugby Union Club is an annual event for  wives, girlfriends, partners, mothers, grandmothers and any other female supporters “The ladies came along and enjoyed the festivities in the marque which was erected on the oval for the day, whilst enjoying some drinks and food and watching the guys tough it out on the field.”

Each year a charity is selected and funds raised on the day go to that charity. This year Rangers decided to donate the money raised on the day to The Toowoomba Hospice.  The Hospice was chosen this year because one of the club’s long-time supporters, Rob (Robbo) Armstrong passed away at the Hospice earlier this year after a short illness and the excellent care and compassion provided to him and his family was greatly appreciated, said Ms Killen.

Toowoomba Hospice Administration and fundraising Manager Mr Mark Munro said it was clubs like the Toowoomba Rangers Rugby Club that help us in our mission to provide quality care in partnership with the community for those with a terminal illness. “we rely on the support of our entire community whether it is community groups/clubs, businesses, companies or individuals we need their help.”

Graham Barron OAM (Toowoomba Hospice Chairman), Teagan Killen (Ladies Day Event Organiser), Danny Wiedman (Secretary Toowoomba Rangers Rugby Club), Andrea Hohn from Connolly’s Lawyers (Ladies Day Major Sponsor)

Mr Munro expressed his sincere thanks on behalf of the Hospice to Ms Killen and her band of helpers; who do a wonderful job in promoting and running the day each year. “The commitment and energy from Teagan and her team of helpers in putting on a day like this for over 100 women each year is a testament to the Rangers Rugby Club.   Raising money isn’t easy today and this fantastic donation of $5,000 shows their commitment in ensuring ‘Ladies Day’ is a great success for those who attend and for their chosen beneficiary -  I thank you!”.

A special Game Day Jersey for the A Grade team was designed with the charity in mind (Hospice butterfly on the front and back) and all the jerseys are auctioned off after the game.  It was with great pleasure that a cheque for $5000 was presented to the Chairman of  The Toowoomba Hospice.

The Toowoomba Hospice is located in O’Quinn Street, Harristown and provides palliative care based on mutual respect, trust and individual needs.

Country Show Coming to Cambooya

Singer/songwriter Johnny Greenwood coming from a rural background was influenced towards Country Music at an early age. After learning to accompany himself on guitar  and performing at local concerts, talent quests etc., he moved to the city to make a name for himself as a singer and entertainer.

Now a veteran of more than thirty five years, he has recorded around 120 songs and sold more than 100,000 units for record companies such as W & G, Sunset, RCA, EMI and currently records for Colonial. His biggest sellers have been his own ‘Goondiwindi Grey’ song which at one stage with RCA made hit parade charts and outsold singles by Elvis Presley, David Bowie and The Sweet in Australia; together with ‘Tibrogargan’, probably his most requested song about the old aboriginal legend of Queensland’s Glasshouse Mountains and trucking songs like ‘The Singing Transport Man’ and ‘My Dad Was A Road Train Man’. Later numbers such as ‘This Land’s A Part Of You And Me’, ‘He Kept It All Australian’, ‘Our Old Flag’ and ‘The Man In Black Has Gone’ (all his own compositions) have also proved popular.
Johnny has worked more than 3000 professional performances during his career in all types of venues in Australia and overseas in Great Britain, Europe, North Africa and New Zealand and performed alongside names like Marty Robbins, Slim Dusty, Lucky Grills, Smoky Dawson, Barry Crocker and many more. He has also appeared on numerous TV shows including Reg Lindsay’s ‘Country Homestead’ and ‘The Lee Conway Show’ etc.

A gold guitar finalist in 1993 for his ‘Jack O’Hagan’ song, Johnny is a multi award recipient eg: ‘Hands Of Fame Tamworth 1980’, ‘Qld. Awards Of Recognition 1998’, ‘TSA Songmaker Award 2003’, ‘Wall Of Honour Tamworth 2008’ etc. He has also been recognised in the ‘Walk A Country Mile’ exhibit in Tamworth.

On top of his recording and performing successes, he has also been successful as a songwriter, with up to 20 or so other artists recording his songs to date,  including Slim Dusty, Chad Morgan, Brian Letton, Terry Gordon, John McSweeney, Melissa Bajric, Dave Reynolds, Dean Perrett and Matt Manning.

Johnny is well established as one of Australia’s recognised true country artists and songwriters. He has sung quite a variety of country material over the years, but prefers the authentic style plus Australian songs and bush ballads and continues as a somewhat legendary figure in Australian Country Music.
