Model Rocket Launch Postponed to Saturday, September 3rd

Rangeville Space Pilots Club’s Launch Controller, Barry Whisson has advised that due to inclement weather and wet conditions underfoot, the Model Rocket Launch at TARMAC Field has been rescheduled to 1.30pm on Saturday, 3rd September.

Toowoomba Model Rocket Launch Scheduled For Saturday, 27th August

How would you like the thrill, the build-up of anticipation before the launching skyward of a model rocketship?…actually to be there counting down the last five seconds leading up to that launch?

Well, the good news is…that you can !

……. because the next launch-day by the Rangeville Space Pilots Club at the T.A.R.M.A.C (Toowoomba Amateur Radio-controlled Model Aero Club) airfield (just ten-minutes south of Toowoomba on the New England Highway, on your right just past “The Mill – The Outlook”) is this Saturday 27th August, starting at 1:30pm.

The first rockets will launch by 2pm, and the  event usually concludes between 3:30 and 4pm.

The Space Pilots’ Club and TARMAC invite you to come along to witness this ‘magic’ event. There’s tension in the air as young and old join in the countdown….as the rocket-maker (who has the honour of pressing the launch button!) ….tenses-up in concentration anticipating what is to come.

Will it be a perfect launch?..(the variety of styles of rockets often reaching heights approaching 1000-feet?)…or will the trajectory send the maker’s precious rocket …one of many to be launched on the day…..either onto the roof….or, worse still, into a neighbouring paddock?

Come and enjoy the afternoon. There is no charge to be there. Just drive in and park at the designated area. Bringing a folding chair is to be recommended.. Refreshments are also available and the site does have toilet facilities.

It promises to be an ‘afternoon with a difference’!….even if it is just to see how the teenage Senior Space Pilots go in competition with each other in launching their ‘brand-new’ “Baby Bertha” space craft.

Launch Controller

PS

If weather becomes a problem, a re-scheduling of the launch 1-week to Saturday, 3rd September is our option, and an advice will be issued.

Response to Criticisms of MU90 Torpedo Project

An article in some Fairfax media papers today (Lost for words, a Navy all at sea, 26 August 2011) and more widely reported in the electronic media contains information that is wrong in fact and misleading.

The article refers to the need to translate technical documents and instructions for the MU90 Light Weight Torpedo into English. This is not correct.

As a condition of contract all key project documentation including technical instructions from the supplier has been delivered in English.

The MU90 torpedo is a complex anti-submarine warfare weapon and is a joint French and Italian development.

Defence is taking advantage of additional test data from these countries as a way to reduce costs and minimise the number of formal ship trials for the Australian MU90 program  to finalise the acceptance into ADF service process.

Torpedo trials are very expensive and each test firing is a significant exercise in its own right. Being able to examine and use the results of other countries’ trials saves the Australian taxpayer a lot of money. To date the French and Italian Navy testing programs have involved the firing of over 200 MU90 torpedoes.  It is the reports and data from these tests – conducted by the French and Italian Navies for their own purposes and provided to Australia – that is in French and Italian and needs to be translated into English.

As a Project of Concern the MU90 Light Weight Torpedo replacement project receives Government, Defence and equipment supplier oversight.
