Please Help Save Our Museum

BACKGROUND:

Currently the Milne Bay Military Museum is closed to the public.

Since 1991 the museum has operated as a not for profit organisation staffed entirely by volunteers. The museum does not receive any government or private funding depending solely on memberships, donations and success in accessing various grants.

The museum occupies a site owned by the Defence department who have decided they do not want this arrangement to continue. The committee of the Milne Bay Military Museum Assn.Inc. has requested that consideration be given by the Defence Department to donate the site and buildings to the Toowoomba Regional Council,  to be held in perpetuity for the citizens of this region.

The Museum Association has now received eviction letters from Defence Minister Marise Payne and Property Management to quit their building by Friday 28th September, 2018. We are therefore asking for support from the public in petitioning the Federal government to remain in the premises.

Please consider if you can support us.

PETITION WORDING

TO THE HONOURABLE THE SPEAKER AND MEMBERS OF
THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

This petition of the Milne Bay Military Museum Association Incorporated and supported by the citizens of Australia draws the attention of the house to the fact that since 1991, while the buildings, including a significant heritage building (the Drill Hall) have been situated on land owned by the Federal Government (the Defence Department) the museum has been run entirely as a not for profit organisation by a group of dedicated volunteers.

The museum provides a vital service to the local and regional community †school groups, service groups and tourism. Currently the Defence Department has forced the cessation of business and suggested the premises should be vacated and all contents removed to another site. This scenario would place a heavy financial burden on the association and deprive the community of a worthy memorial to those who served their country in significant conflicts.

We therefore ask the house, as the custodian of the site, to request the Defence department to gift the current site and buildings to the Toowoomba Regional Council to be held in perpetuity for the citizens of the region, and for the museum to continue to be administered by the Milne Bay Military Museum Association Incorporation on the council’s behalf.

Artists Sought For Downlands Art Exhibition

The Downlands Art Exhibition in Toowoomba is seeking ten new artists for its annual show in September. Emerging and established artists are invited to apply by 14 July to exhibit in the region’s largest annual art show on 22 to 29 September 2018.

The Downlands Art Exhibition features over 1,000 works in a variety of media encompassing oil paint, water colour, ceramics, photography, sculpture, jewellery, installations, print making and
drawing.

For the first time
, the Exhibition is part of the official Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers program and it has been extended from two to eight days. All pieces on display are available for sale, with the Exhibition being the primary fund raiser for the Parent and Friends’ Association which supports Downlands student learning.

According to Evan Hollis who has curated the Exhibition for the past 11 years, introducing new artists is a way of broadening the mix of works on display. “Exhibiting artists are generally by invitation only, so it’s a rare opportunity to open this prestigious show to new artists from around the Darling Downs and beyond,” he said.

“I am looking for a high standard of execution in traditional or contemporary art and something that will appeal to our buyers. New artists will keep the show fresh and ever-changing †we have some patrons who attend and purchase each year, either for investment, for home decorating or just because they love art.”
Space for new work is limited to two square metres per artist, with no size limit for sculpture. Artists have until 14 July 2018 to submit images of their art pieces, a brief statement about their work and a biography or CV.
All artists not represented by a gallery are eligible for the USQ Artsworx Encouragement Award. Judged by the curator, the prize is tuition to the value of $920 at the USQ McGregor Summer Arts Retreat 2019.

In another first for this year’s Exhibition, USQ students undertaking a curatorial internship will assist in the administration of these ten new artists, so they obtain real world curatorial experience.

State Rose Garden Award Wins Award

Queensland State Rose Garden, Toowoomba has received an International Award for Garden Excellence
at the recent World Federation of Rose Societies Conference held in Copenhagen, Denmark – one of only seven awards presented.

More than 600 people from 40 countries attended the Conference which is held every three years in a different country.

Twelve months prior to the conference, nominations were received from countries around the world. Strict criteria, in particular, to improve the public’s knowledge in all matters concerning the rose, garden design, development , maintenance, display, signage, open to the public, and assisting with the preservation of the genus, is required. A story needed to be written , a three minute video produced and most importantly be nominated by a reputable Rosarian.

Queensland State Rose Garden is fortunate to have dedicated members of the Friends of Queensland’s State Rose Garden in Newtown Park Toowoomba Inc. who have worked tirelessly over eighteen years to develop the gardens, and fulfil the initial dreams of three notable business men.

Members have raised money from events, businesses in Toowoomba and been donated in kind help. A booklet was produced outlining the achievements (This can be viewed on the Qld State Rose Garden website), a video was produced (thanks to Toowoomba Regional Council for their assistance and expertise).

Fortunately one of the members, the late Rod Hultgren, was acquainted with Mr Paul Hains (President, National Rose Society of Australia and President, The Queensland Rose Society) who worked with Rod over the years suggesting new plantings and collections. It was Paul Hains who nominated Queensland State Rose Garden for the Award. When the nominations were presented at Conference and the videos viewed, Paul Hains spoke at length why our garden should receive an Award. Only seven Gardens won votes to receive the Award.

This International Award will benefit the Toowoomba Region greatly, especially in tourism, making it one more reason for people to visit Toowoomba and stay longer. Brisbane is hosting the National Rose Championships October 6 &7 this year where most Australian Rosarians will attend. It is now planned to organise a bus trip to Toowoomba on Monday 8th October to view the gardens. Hopefully, the plaque will be available for unveiling as it comes from Italy and is not usually available for 12 months.

Also, Queensland State Rose Garden in Newtown Park Toowoomba Inc. Members and Toowoomba Regional Council Parks and Recreation staff are holding the yearly Rose Pruning Demonstration Saturday 4th August at the Rose Garden in Newtown Park from 8:30am to 10:30am followed by a tour of the park. The public are welcome and encouraged to attend, at no cost, to learn the latest in rose care.

The Rose Garden belongs to all Toowoomba Regional Council residents – enjoy it, protect it from vandals, report any problems, do not pick the roses – leave them for all to enjoy and photograph and share with visitors to Toowoomba . The Gardens bloom from October to June each year.

Congratulations to the small band of Rose lovers who have worked to make this happen for the city at a minimal cost to rate payers.

Mr Barron, who has been a Volunteer with the Toowoomba Hospice himself for over 21 years, expressed his admiration for the achievements of staff, volunteers and supporters especially in the last 15 years, who have helped in providing professional palliative care service to the local community in a beautiful and peaceful home like environment.

“Toowoomba Hospice’s vision is to provide palliative care based on mutual respect, trust and individual needs, and I am proud to say that we do this very successfully with the support and commitment of our wonderful Staff and Volunteers” Said Mr Barron

In the words of Dame Cicely Saunders, the founder of the modern hospice movement, who would have been 100 this year: ‘You matter because you are you, and you matter to the end of your life. We will do all we can not only to help you die peacefully, but also to live until you die’.”

A Most Curious Adventure in Toowoomba

Follow Alice as she falls down a rabbit hole into a strange world…This new exhibition at Cobb+C Museum in Toowoomba was officially opened by Acting CEO and Director of Queensland Museum Network, Dr Jim Thompson.

Alice’s Wonderland is a colourful hands-on exhibition that brings basic science concepts to life for 3 – 8 year olds and their families. Children are invited to explore the way they perceive and make sense of the world around them in this new, hands-on exhibition based on Lewis Carroll’s well-known Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.

Just as Alice’s curiosity led her to follow the white rabbit down the rabbit hole, children can let curiosity guide their way through a series of educational exhibits which introduce optics and illusions, word play, physics and maths.

Each activity will introduce a range of numeracy, literacy and science concepts in a delightful and playful way. It is a nationally travelling exhibition presented by Museums Victoria.

Exhibition admission is included with general Museum entry: Adults $12.50, Children $6.50 and Family (2 Adults and up to 4 Children) $32. Museum entry is free for residents of the Toowoomba Regional Council area with proof of residency.

Queensland’s Largest Camellia Show Launched

The much anticipated Toowoomba Camellia Show and Garden Expo was launched Friday, 15th June at “The Windmills” in the Cobb and Co/TAFE South-West precinct, corner of Lindsay and Campbell Streets.

Toowoomba Hospice Chair Graham Barron and VIP’s jointly cut a spectacular camellia garland, thus triggering off a series of events to culminate in Queensland’s biggest Camellia Show and Garden Expo on Saturday and Sunday, 21 and 22 July.

Cr Carol Taylor, Hospice chair Graham Barron OAM, Greg Johnson, Camellia Show chair Kevin Cotterell and Jan Johnson (Heritage Bank)

Those events include the much-awaited naming of this year’s Toowoomba Winter Garden and the official Queensland re-launch of a heritage camellia. President Kevin Cotterell said, “The Camellia Show Committee is over the moon with the way in which the show has grown in reputation across the nation”.

“Toowoomba is internationally renowned as “The Garden City” and that’s why more and more visitors come here. There is nothing more fulfilling than taking in our abundant gardens and attractions, plus the goodwill of our community over a beautiful Toowoomba winter weekend.”

As well as a spectacular display of beautiful camellias, the event will boast an expansive Garden Expo with over 40 exhibitors showing a range of plants and products. There’ll be non-stop entertainment; combined car club displays and art, craft and local produce.

Inspirational speakers on camellias, gardening and horticulture include award-wining Dr Stephen Utick, “Gardening for the Good Life’s” Clare Bickle and the “Garden Guru” Phil Dudman, from ABC Gardening Australia.

Committee member Greg Johnson, who is no stranger to colourful outfits, was again at his “floral best” for the launch. He said, “I just love being involved with this event †happy people from near and far, garden lovers all and proceeds to our beloved Toowoomba Hospice. Everyone wins!”

Toowoomba Hospice Promotions and Fundraising Manager, Mark Munro added, “We’re very excited about the 2018 event. Staging Queensland’s largest camellia show in Toowoomba is great for our dedicated gardeners, for tourism and our economy.”
