Free Christmas Rockmelons At Farmers’ Market

Whoa! ‘My Local Feast’ Farmers’ Market offers free Christmas rockmelons at last farmers’ market for the year

Who said you never get anything for free? Organisers of the My Local Feast Farmers’ Markets believe Christmas is a time of giving and feasting, and have organised a special treat for shoppers at this week’s market at the Empire Theatre on Thursday, December 17th.

Josie Townsend_2Farmers’ Market Manager, Josie Townsend said, “We considered having Santa turn up, but he is so busy at this time of year, he helped us work with local farmer and Santa’s Helper, Teresa Kluck from Limit Farms in the Lockyer Valley, to share these yummy Christmas rockmelons with you.”

The rockmelons will be given to shoppers who make a purchase from any other stallholder at the markets between 4 and 6pm and will be limited to one per family, so the Christmas spirit can be shared.  There will also be a caffeine Happy Hour with Naughty Goat Farms coffee trailer offering $3 coffees between 3pm †5pm.

It is an amazing atmosphere and if it rains we simply move into the Church. These markets always go ahead.”

The My Local Feast Farmers’ Markets are Toowoomba’s only weekly farmers’ markets and are held every Thursday at the Empire Theatre grounds from 3pm †7pm.

This Thursday will be the final market for the year with the weekly markets restarting from Thursday 21st January, 2016.

My Local Feast logoWhy: Because Toowoomba, as one of the largest food growing regions in Australia deserves a vibrant local food economy that supports farmers. We need to start addressing the market power of the current supermarket duopoly and creating viable options for food distribution channels. Farmers’ markets are not the only answer but they do provide an ‘experience’ of connecting with the person who grows your food †and that is very powerful in changing the community’s behavior with the way they shop.
Mojo Business Management, the local company that runs ‘My Local Feast Farmers Markets’ will be launching a number of other local food-based projects in the New Year including farmers’ market boxes, food tours, a local marketing campaign supporting local businesses that support farmers and a national online social food connection platform.

Raising The White Flag?

No, Toowoomba isn’t surrendering to anyone.  On Thursday 10th December the Zonta Clubs of Toowoomba are hosting a flag raising to honour the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and endorse Toowoomba & Zontas ‘Say No to Violence’ campaign.

Flags of Australia, the United Nations and  Zonta will be raised in solidarity to pledge and uphold the spirit of ‘16 Days of Activism’ run from 25th November, UN International Day of Elimination of Violence against Women (White Ribbon Day), to 10th December, Human Rights Day.

The campaign spans these 16 Days in order to highlight the link between violence against women and human rights. Today, women and girls are subjected to many forms of human rights violations solely on the basis of their gender.

The 16 Days period includes other significant dates like International Human Rights Defenders Day (29th November), World Aids Day (1st December) and the anniversary of the Montreal Massacre (6th December).

Thousands are expected to attend the  2015 Toowoomba CBD Christmas Carnival – a non-stop, free Christmas extravaganza which will feature loads of entertainment and a Santa sack full of surprises.

Entertainment starts at 4.30pm and features many musicians, entertainers and singers including the Helen Earley Ensemble, the Cheerleaders, Harlaxton RSL Brass Band, Sing Australia, High Altitude Harmony, Toowoomba Choral Society and the Helene and Fiona Roving Christmas Minstrels.

Main entertainment locations are Kwong Sang Walk, Gallery Park, City Hall, Village Green, Eat Street and proximate to Lincraft, Gelatissimo, Bank of Queensland and Westpac.
Kwong Sang Walk MarketsThere will be face painting for children, a jumping castle and giveaways plus a movie on Village Green, “Mickey’s Christmas Carol.”

And on top of all that expect to see Santa’s arrival, the lighting of both the Christmas Tree and City Hall and a fabulous Sleigh Parade through town.

And if that’s not enough the CBD business group, City Heart Toowoomba, is organising not one, but two markets in Kwong Sang Walk and Gallery Park.

The group’s media spokesperson  (former Toowoomba Chamber CEO)  Greg Johnson said, “We jumped at the opportunity to organise the markets for Council.”

“Our charter is to bring people to the CBD to benefit our shops, restaurants and cafes and to enjoy this special area. This event will do precisely that.

“We’ll have over twenty local food producers and craftspeople setting up stalls with an incredible range of tasty treats and Christmas gift options.

“It is indeed beginning to look like Christmas and where better to enjoy it than in our wonderful Toowoomba CBD.”
