Multicultural Men’s Shed For Darling Heights Community

A group of volunteers is working on a project to build a multicultural men’s shed at Darling Heights State School to help upskill and integrate migrant men into the community.

Darling Heights State School parent/student engagement officer Ricky Adams approached the Toowoomba West Men’s Shed last year to be involved in the project and they were happy to help.

Shed president and retired mental health worker Murray Trewavas said he and other members would run workshops teaching migrant men basic home maintenance such as fixing doors, windows and broken taps.

“It is also about meeting people, building relationships and helping them with their issues,” Mr Trewavas said.

Member for Toowoomba South, David Janetzki MP applauded the idea and congratulated Mr Trewavas on securing $26,462 through the Gambling Community Benefit Fund program to contribute to the project.

“It is wonderful when you see grassroots community organisations such as the Toowoomba West Men’s Shed reaching out and working to include everyone,” Mr Janetzki said.

“Darling Heights is a diverse community and this is a project that will bring everyone together,” he said.

Toowoomba West Men’s Shed president Murray Trewavas, Member for Toowoomba South David Janetzki MP and parent engagement officer Ricky Adams view plans for a multicultural men’s shed at Darling Heights State School.

Currently, 52% of students at Darling Heights State School were born overseas or their parents were born overseas. Students come from 37 different countries and 39 different languages are spoken in their homes.

Mrs Adams said the project came about as a way to engage fathers with their community. “I’m conscious of the fact that there are a lot of men out there who have nothing else in their lives.

“There are many men who have come from a working background but when they arrive in Australia they sit in a two-bedroom unit all day with no garden and nothing to do,” she said. “They aren’t able to work because of their language skills so this new men’s shed will be a great place for them to visit.”

Mrs Adams said the Toowoomba West Men’s Shed volunteers would also take on the role of mentors to some children. “Many of these children don’t have fathers as their fathers have been killed in war or are missing so this is a lovely opportunity for students as well,” she said.

The multicultural men’s shed is part of a bigger project called The Hub that the community will hear more about in future.

Remembering Our War Animals

Toowoomba Regional Council is inviting the community to remember our war animals on National Purple Poppy Day. The Animal War Memorial at the Queensland State Rose Garden, Newtown will host a commemoration service at 9.00am on Sunday, 24th February.

War Animal Memorial in the Queensland State Rose Garden, Newtown Park, Toowoomba

Toowoomba Regional Council Deputy Mayor Cr Carol Taylor said animals have served our nation in war, and we should take the time to remember their centuries of service.

“The purple poppy symbolises all animals who have died during military conflict and throughout the world, there will be wreaths laid to remember these faithful servants.”

“While most people will know about Simpson and his donkey or the charging horses of Beersheba, the deeds of many other horses, camels, dogs, cats, pigeons, and even marine animals will be remembered on this national day of commemoration.

“It is a little-known fact that pigeons from Toowoomba Region received the highest commendation for a military animal, the Dickin Medal, for their service of our country.” Cr Taylor said.

“According to the Australian War Animal Memorial organisation over 9 million animals died during WWI including many thousands of Australian war horses, mules, donkeys, pigeons, and dogs.

Toowoomba’s War Animal Memorial is one of our nation’s main commemoration sites, with services  held throughout Australia and also in Waiouru, New Zealand,  and the Australian War Memorial to animals at war in Pozieres, France.

Cr Taylor went on to remind us, “as Gandhi once said, ‘the greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated. On National Purple Poppy Day we should all take a moment to honour the contributions animals have made to our nation.”

Christmas Elves Pack 300 ‘Buckets of Joy’

Amanda Roberts (McConache Stedman), Mayor Paul Antonio and Penny Hamilton (YellowBridge)

At least 20 YellowBridge Christmas elves have been at work busily packing 300 yellow bucket hampers

The buckets, were filled with gourmet Christmas food donated by YellowBridge staff, partners and community, with the help from major sponsor McConachie Stedman.

Dubbed ‘buckets of joy’, they will be gifted to local people who are known to be in most need, including people with a disability, single parents and older people without family.

Staff from YellowBridge QLD and McConachie Stedman were joined by Toowoomba Mayor Paul Antonio, Deputy Mayor Carol Taylor and Cr Nancy Sommerfield and Member for Toowoomba North Trevor Watts helping to pack some hampers including the special Mayor’s Bucket.

YellowBridge CEO, Penny Hamilton said “Christmas is meant to be a special time of the year filled with love and happiness. Sadly, this is not the case for some people who will spend Christmas alone or are unable to afford extra special food so we are trying to make it a memorable day for them and their family.”

Toowoomba accounting firm, McConachie Stedman, has returned as the Appeal’s major sponsor which helps to cover the cost of running the initiative. “We loved being a part of the Appeal last year and helping YellowBridge to reach their target of buckets filled,” said director Amanda Roberts.

“Helping local people by supporting the Yellow Bucket Appeal is a wonderful way for us to share the true spirit of Christmas.”

“We are really pleased to partner with YellowBridge again and our generous staff have got together their donations in an effort to beat last year’s contribution.”
