1.3km Section Of Perseverance Water Main Replaced

Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) is completing the latest stage of vital renewal works on the Perseverance raw water main north of Toowoomba.

TRC Water and Waste Committee chair Cr Nancy Sommerfield said Council was finalising work on replacing a 1.3km section of the Perseverance raw water main near Geham.

“Council has contributed $8 million in the current financial year for the ongoing replacement of ageing sections of the pipeline,” Cr Sommerfield said.

“The overall project involves replacing the 28km pre-stressed concrete water main from the Pechey reservoirs to the Mt Kynoch Water Treatment Plant. This work has been scheduled in the cooler, off-demand months and will be completed over several years.

“The existing pipeline was constructed in the early 1960s and due to its age, there have been more frequent pipe joint failures in recent years.

“This highlights the reality facing local governments across the state. Council is balancing the provision of new infrastructure with the costs of essential and ongoing maintenance for existing assets across our growing region.
“Council’s Construction and Maintenance workforce is replacing the original main with a slightly larger, coated-steel pipe that comes in 13.5m lengths.

“This project will guarantee the security of the Toowoomba Bulk Water Supply network that delivers safe drinking water supplies to more than 54,000 properties. (The network supplies drinking water for Toowoomba and surrounding towns of Oakey, Jondaryan, Highfields, Crows Nest, Kingsthorpe, Gowrie Junction, Meringandan, Wyreema, Westbrook, Hodgson Vale and Goombungee.)

The current work closely follows the alignment of the original pipeline and will improve the interconnection of the Perseverance and Cressbrook raw water supply pipelines.

Connection And Mateship For Older Men With Dementia

A newly opened men’s shed at a Glenvale aged care home is helping older men with dementia reconnect with their past and forge new friendships.

Toowoomba West Men’s Shed president Murray Trewavas has collaborated with Ozcare Aged Care Facility on Greenwattle Street to provide residents with projects to work on in between his monthly visits to the onsite men’s shed, known as “The Folly”.

“Currently the residents are making cat scratching towers to donate to the RSPCA so we do the major cutting then get the residents – the majority of who are in wheelchairs – to do the sanding, painting, gluing and assembly so they are involved in the whole process,” Mr Trewavas said.

“We have already built a rapport with them, laugh and joke with them and that’s what it is all about,” he said.

Member for Toowoomba South David Janetzki MP has praised Ozcare and Toowoomba West Men’s Shed for providing residents with the important connection to their community.

“This on-site men’s shed gives residents an opportunity to socialise, share life experiences, work with their hands again and maintain a sense of purpose with their projects,” Mr Janetzki said. “They are working on projects to donate to the community while enjoying the atmosphere of old-fashioned mateship,” he said.

Ozcare Toowoomba facility manager Jeramy Hope said the men’s shed, which opened last month, was helping people living with dementia reminisce about their childhood and lives on the land.

“We have up to 25 residents taking part and we have many people who have come to live at Ozcare from the greater Darling Downs area so they have a lot of experience of life on the land,” Mr Hope said.

“We have a lovely bunch of gentlemen here that were very much involved in the establishment of the men’s shed so there is a lot of ownership, excitement and expectations with their projects,” he said.

Mr Trewavas and a few other volunteers from the Toowoomba West Men’s Shed visit “The Folly” once a month to help residents with their work and provide new projects for residents to work on for the next month.

Kerry Shine announces candidacy for Toowoomba Regional Council with pledge to stop rising water costs.
Former Toowoomba North MP, Kerry Shine has announced he’s running for Toowoomba Regional Council at the 2020 Local Government elections (but not for mayoralty).

Mr Shine said he has the experience and proven track record to deliver for the Toowoomba Region on Council.

“The experience I can bring to the table includes 20 years in small business, 11 years as a Member of Parliament and time as a Senior Cabinet Minister in Queensland,” Mr Shine said.

“During my time as an MP, I was able to deliver $1.6 billion for the Toowoomba Region, including $180 million to secure our water supply.”

“Despite the record drought, Toowoomba is better positioned due to the construction of the pipeline supplying Toowoomba I secured in 2009.”

Mr Shine believes the rising cost of water will be a key issue this election.  “Like so many residents, I’m concerned with the recent increase to the water access charge, it’s now over $650 a year for the average ratepayer †compared to $235 in Brisbane,” Mr Shine said.

“I know it’s getting harder for families to afford, that’s why I won’t support any increases to the water access charge.  Instead I’ll fight for a better deal from the State Government using my experience as a former Water Minister, as well as cutting unnecessary spending from Council’s budget.”

Mr Shine also announced a listening tour, pledging to knock on as many doors as possible before the March 2020 poll.

Picnic Supporting Drought Affected Families

Every year, the Glennie School Foundation’s ‘Ben’s Pop Up Picnic’ has an exciting twist †guests don’t know where they are going until the morning of the event.

The Ben’s Pop Up Picnic 2018 was held at Reflections at Cooby Dam

Previous locations have included Reflections at Cooby and DownsSteam Tourist Railway and Museum. This year’s location will not disappoint and is somewhere that the majority of people will not have experienced lunch before.

Chair of The Glennie School Foundation, Mr David Russell, said that as well as a surprise location, this year’s Ben’s Pop Up Picnic has an additional twist. ‘This ongoing devastating drought is really taking its toll on many rural families. Being a boarding school, we have a large rural community within our Glennie family.’

‘Funds raised from this event will go towards supporting our Glennie boarders from drought-declared areas. It is really important to the Foundation Directors that we are able to help our rural families as much as possible,’ Mr Russell said.

Mr Russell said that funds from previous events have made a significant contribution to the education of girls at The Glennie School. ‘The generosity of our Glennie community and also our local business community has enabled us to contribute a significant amount of funds to scholarships at The Glennie School.

‘A scholarship can make a huge difference to a family that may not otherwise be able to afford a Glennie education. Scholarships are a wonderful way to give girls a head start in life,’ Mr Russell said.

The Glennie School Foundation has also been able to make significant contributions to The Glennie School’s Sue Edwards Science Centre and Clive Berghofer Sports Centre. While Glennie girls also benefit from these state of the art facilities every day, the wider
Toowoomba community also benefits from being able to use the facilities, particularly our brilliant new sports centre.

Thanks to event sponsor, Momentum Well Service, Preserve the Moose will be playing. Range Event Hire has also joined as an event sponsor but their involvement will remain a secret until the day. There will be a live auction, raffles, games, prizes, a fashion parade and pop up shop.

Ben’s Pop Up Picnic is named in honour of Archdeacon Benjamin Glennie. Ben’s Pop Up Picnic is being held on Sunday, 20th October, 12:00pm †4:00pm. ‘Look to the Stars’ Plaque Dedication, Crow’s Nest Police Station


On Saturday 19th October, 2019 at 9.30 am, there will be a dedication/acknowledgment on behalf of the Queensland Police Service of the “Look to the Stars” plaque.

After a considerable work and assistance from Toowoomba Regional Council and the Crow’s Nest Men’s Shed, the front of Crow’s Nest Police Station is looking resplendent with its rock and plaque surrounded by crushed stone.

“Look to the Stars” is an exciting initiative based around some specific First Nations artwork commissioned by the Queensland Police to create a bridge of understanding between police and First Nations people. It’s a big day in Crow’s Nest, and you are invited to be part of  this very special event.  It will be a short ceremony with a few words from some key people followed by a cuppa and biscuit
