Revisiting Our Pioneering Past

There’ll be  plenty to interest and entertain families at Highfields Pioneer Village on Australia Day, Sunday January 26th.
Members are busy arranging a program which includes the Fire Museum, beekeeping, blacksmithing, tinsmithing and silversmithing, a working draught horse, sheep shearing and spinning and weaving. There’ll also miniature train and vintage bus rides for a small fare.

There’ll be demonstrations of how life used to be, starting with  milking a cow at the Russell & Sons Dairy Pavilion, and youngsters will especially love the Animal Nursery.

Highfields Pioneer Village volunteers will be running a sausage sizzle at lunchtime. You are welcome to join in the fun and enter the damper making competition at 12 noon, and judging at 1.30pm.
The Australlia Day Flag Raising  and Australia Day Awards will take place from 2.00pm, with a Toowoomba Region Councillor presenting awards to local recipients. Local school captains have also been invited to each make a 2 minute address on “What Australia Means To Me”.

Following the official ceremony, Toowoomba Regional Council will sponsor free Billy Tea and Damper for everyone attending.
Entry to Highfields Pioneer Village at 73 Wirraglen Road, Highfields is free after 1.30pm on Australia Day, Sunday January 26th, although donations would be welcome.

Toowoomba Region Mayor Paul Antonio has extended his deepest sympathy to the Taylor family following the passing of Roger Taylor.

The husband of Deputy Mayor Cr Carol Taylor succumbed  on Saturday morning (18th January) to complications following a brown snake bite on the home property at Vale View.

Mayor Antonio said he and all of the Toowoomba Regional Council were saddened by this tragic loss. This is devasting news,” Mayor Antonio said.

On behalf of Council, and the broader community, I would like to wish his wife Carol, her family and friends our sympathy. Roger was an active businessman, a fine family man and well-respected member of the community.”

He has been a massive part of this Region for a long time and there is no doubt that his loss will be felt. During this time, our thoughts and prayers are with Carol, and their extended family.”

While this will no doubt be an incredibly difficult period for their family, the community support has meant a great deal to Carol. In trying times such as this, the family is truly grateful for the love and support they have received.”

Reds Vs. Waratahs Dalby Match Tickets Available


Tickets are now on sale for the much-anticipated Qld Reds Vs. NSW Waratahs trial game in Dalby on Friday, 24th January.

This is the first time that the Queensland Reds have played a game in the Western Downs region and the first regional trial match in 10 years, and residents can be right there to enjoy the action as part of the live, family event.

President of the Dalby Wheatmen Rugby Club Neal Kiley said he was thrilled to be hosting the trial match at the Dalby Leagues Club.  We anticipate the game will draw a good-sized crowd from right around the region, not just the Western Downs,” Mr Kiley said.

In Dalby, we have a great relationship between the Downs Rugby and the Dalby Leagues Clubs and we are all keen to work together to ensure that the Queensland Reds also have opportunities to connect with our community while they are here for a few days before the game.”

This is the final preseason game before the playing season officially kicks off and will include a Ladies 7’s showcase, as well as a half-time match for Under-11s.”

Western Downs Mayor Paul McVeigh said the event added to the region’s vibrant events calendar. We look forward to welcoming visitors from as far away as Moree, Goondiwindi, Roma and our northern neighbours as well, over the few days leading up to the game,” Cr McVeigh said.

Council is supporting the Queensland Rugby Union in their community activities across our region over that week, which will include a coaching clinic on Wednesday 22 January, a Captain’s Run and visits around the region, plus a corporate luncheon on Friday before the game.”

Primary Health Care GP Centre For Millmerran

The Millmerran Primary Health Care Centre will open on Tuesday,14th January 2020 to support general practice in Millmerran, following the sudden closure of the Millmerran Medical Centre due to staffing problems.

The new clinic will be open Monday to Saturday from 9am to 5pm on the grounds of the Millmerran Multipurpose Health Service (MPHS).

Darling Downs Health Executive Director Joanne Shaw said that the priority was to open the facility as soon as possible to maintain primary care in Millmerran.

Hospital staff have been able to support the increase in primary health presentations to the emergency department, but the opening of this practice will mean a much better experience for patients rather than waiting in emergency for non-urgent care.

We have worked hard to make sure we can continue caring for the Millmerran community and I would like to thank our staff for putting this practice together so quickly.”

Mayor Pays Tribute To Leading Citizen

Toowoomba Region Mayor Paul Antonio has paid tribute to the distinguished community service of prominent Toowoomba identity, Professor Peter Swannell AM, who died on Wednesday, 8th January. Mayor Antonio said he extended his sympathies to Professor Swannell’s wife, Janice, and his extended family.

On behalf of Council and the wider community, I am deeply saddened to hear of Peter’s passing and acknowledge his extraordinary service to our region,” Mayor Antonio said.

Peter was a formidable character who wholeheartedly committed to every role he undertook. After joining the University of Southern Queensland in 1990 as the foundation Professor of Engineering, Peter rose to the position of Vice-Chancellor, before retiring in 2004.”

His talents were put to good use at Toowoomba’s Empire Theatre, when he was appointed the inaugural chair of the Empire Theatres Pty Ltd in 1999. He showed tremendous dedication and passion to the role and guided the Empire Theatres through a period of great expansion. He retired from this role in 2017, but he and his wife remained enthusiastic patrons at performances.

Above all else, Peter, who was born in England, was a proud Toowoomba resident, who has championed our city and region at every occasion. He was a lively and entertaining speaker without peer. We have lost a great Toowoomba resident,” Mayor Antonio said.

The rural town of Millmerran south-west of Toowoomba has been shocked to find its only GP clinic is now closed.

The Millmerran Medical Centre at 45 Campbell Street despatched text messages and emails to patients informing them the surgery  wouldn’t re-open in 2020.

** IMPORTANT NOTICE **

Millmerran Medical Centre will NOT be re-opening in 2020. Please organize alternate on-going medical care.

For handoverof your medical records, please ask your new GP to arrange a Transfer of Medical Records form to be emailed to info@millmed.com.au.”

Secretary of Millmerran Progress and Commerce Association, Roselle Crellin,  had this comment for us –

Millmerran Medical Centre has provided health care services to the community since the 1940’s, operating from the current location since September 2004.

Visiting allied health specialists including 2 psychologists, an optometrist, hearing specialist, podiatrist and dietitian also worked from the Centre when in Millmerran.

The Centre was run by Dr Andrew Reedy, who had been based in Millmerran for a number of years, and also visited Cecil Plains.

Toowoomba Region Mayor Paul Antonio, who grew up and has a property in Millmerran was stunned,  describing  the knowledge as “catastrophic.”

The closure will force patients to head to either the Millmerran Hospital or journey to Pittsworth.
Darling Downs Hospital and Health Service executive director Jo Shaw stated “We will bring in additional doctors to the Millmerran Hospital in the interim to support the potential increase in primary health presentations,” she said.

“Darling Downs Health didn’t have forewarning of the closure, but we will ensure the Millmerran community has continuing access to medical care while a new practice is established.

“The hospital can sustain the additional presentations, and we encourage anyone in the community seeking medical treatment to call 13 HEALTH  (1343 2584) for health advice and assistance 24 hours a day, seven days a week, or present to the emergency department at the Millmerran Hospital.”

It’s Time To Welcome In The New Year


To finish 2019 in style, Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) will once again host a free night of family friendly celebrations in lower Queens Park, off Margaret Street, Toowoomba.

TRC Environment and Community Committee Chair Councillor Geoff McDonald said the celebrations were an ideal opportunity for residents to unwind and reflect on the past year.

With the ongoing drought and recent fires within the Region, there is no doubt 2019 has been a year of challenges but there have also been some amazing achievements we have accomplished this year,” he said.

To celebrate the year that’s been and to welcome in the New Year, I invite everyone to come along to Queens Park on 31 December to join the party.

As a result of the current total fire ban, and out of respect for those affected by the recent bushfires locally and around the country, there will be no fireworks display this year, but we will still be hosting an evening of family fun and festivities.

In lieu of the fireworks we will be staging a light show to bring colour and light to the evening in a safe and enjoyable way. We will also be staging a rain dance to see if we can crack the drought which would be the perfect way to kick off 2020.”

The food and rides will be open from 4.30pm and the family fun activities will be commencing at 5pm.

The light show will start at 7.45pm and we will be joined by some emergency vehicles with their sirens blasting and lights flashing. There will be an opportunity for attendees to donate to the Bushfire Appeal.”
