Western Downs Community Services to Benefit from Study

0

RHealth, through the Western Downs Communities Network (WDCN), has begun a study into professional development opportunities for the Western Downs’ community services sector.

The project, which has been made possible with support from QGC, will ultimately deliver tailored professional development workshops that help local community workers improve their ability to prepare successful funding proposals and manage community development projects.

RHealth Manager, Trish Leddington-Hill, said the first step of the project would involve conducting a training needs assessment of Western Downs’ community services workers, including paid and unpaid people working in education and childcare, health and aged care, community support, sport and recreation, community groups and emergency services.

With a number of major resource companies beginning operations in the Western Downs area, we expect there will be more funding opportunities available to the community,” she said.

It will become increasingly important for community organisations to understand how to access funding from a broad range of organisations”.

WDCN is an established network of organisations across the Western Downs that work together to improve the liveability of the region. Lead agencies include RHealth, Western Downs Regional Council, Queensland Government and Spiritus.

WDCN Co-ordinator, Natalie Drake-Brockman, said the training needs assessment supported by QGC will value-add to information gathered previously by WDCN.

WDCN’s connection with community service providers across the Western Downs means it is well placed to conduct the training needs assessment,” she said.

The information gathered through this consultation will be very important in building an accurate snapshot of the needs, skills and capacity of our community groups.”

QGC Social Performance Gas Fields Manager, Tony Heidrich, said QGC was pleased to be supporting the study.

This is an important first step in understanding how QGC can best assist the community services sector to make full use of funding opportunities offered by the development of the coal seam gas industry in the Western Downs region,” he said.

(QGC Limited (ACN: 089 642 553) is a leading Australian coal seam gas explorer and producer focused on supplying cleaner hydrocarbon energy to growing domestic and international markets. QGC is establishing one of Australia’s largest capital infrastructure projects to turn world-class reserves of coal seam gas into liquefied natural gas (LNG). Queensland Curtis LNG, a priority project for QGC, involves expanding exploration and development in southern and central Queensland and transporting gas via a 380km buried pipeline to Curtis Island near Gladstone, where it will be liquefied. Federal LNP Member for Maranoa Bruce Scott is encouraging people across Maranoa to take one minute on Thursday, November 11 to pay tribute to Australia’s fallen servicemen and women.

Mr Scott says Remembrance Day is an important opportunity to remember what our nation has sacrificed for democracy. If the nation can stop to watch the Melbourne Cup, then we can certainly stop for one minute’s silence at 11 am on November 11 to remember those brave Australian men and women who have fought and died for the freedoms we so often take for granted,”

Mr Scott said. We must also spare a thought for our brave diggers who are currently overseas, serving in peacekeeping roles, and helping to bring democracy to other nations.”

Mr Scott is also encouraging people to wear a red poppy on Remembrance Day, as a silent tribute to our past and present diggers.

Make Tracks Back to the Future

You don’t need a Delorean to see the past and the future at the same time,  just visit the Transport and Main Roads Heritage Centre this weekend. This will be the third of the four weekend open days planned for the international exhibition Industrial Desire: Detroit Concept Cars.

This American exhibition features concept car models, drawings and film footage shedding light on exciting new ways technologies and materials could influence our methods of road travel in the coming years. It is a unique opportunity to sneak a peek at the highly secretive and competitive world of car design and witness concept cars that are not normally seen outside of the industry.

Various car clubs from South East Queensland will be in attendance showcasing the role they play in preserving our transport history. This weekend’s participants include the Toowoomba Hot Rodders, the Darling Downs Veteran and Vintage Motor Club and the Queensland Corvette Club.

For something completely different, the Darling Downs Model Railing Club will be attending with a model from their collection of a compact N scale layout based loosely on the New England area of the United States. After seeing the exciting concepts on display, take the opportunity to talk with like-minded enthusiasts over a BBQ hosted by Rotary Club of Toowoomba City.

The Transport and Main Roads Heritage Centre, located near the airport terminal on Mutze Street, is a hidden gem in Toowoomba, with an engaging representation of the skill and dedication that goes in to connecting Queensland from early pioneering days to current road-building technologies.

Industrial Desire is presented by Transport and Main Roads Heritage Centre through artisan in partnership with the College for Creative Studies, Detroit, and toured by Museum and Gallery Services Queensland.

Open this Saturday, 6 November from 10 – 2pm. FREE ENTRY

One more weekend open day has been planned for Saturday 27 November.

The centre is open Monday to Friday, 10am to 4pm.
