Minor Localised Flooding in Dalby – Final Update

As a result of heavy rainfall in the district in the past 24 hours Dalby residents are advised that minor localised flooding has occurred in the township.

With no significant rainfall across the Western Downs this afternoon or forecast overnight, Western Downs Regional Council has issued its final update for this flood event.

As of 6pm this evening, the Western Downs Local Disaster Management Group has advised the following:

* Dalby – Myall Creek has dropped to 1.49 metres and will continue falling overnight.
* Condamine River – water level is falling.
* Charley’s Creek at Chinchilla – water level is falling.
* Brigalow Bridge – water level has levelled off and is expected to slowly fall overnight.
* Moonie River at Teelba Creek – water level is falling.
* Moonie River at Flinton – water level has levelled off and is expected to slowly fall overnight.

The Bureau of Meteorology says the region can expect a mostly fine day tomorrow with some isolated drizzle in the morning.

The Disaster Coordination Centre has not been activated. There are no reported road closures throughout the region due to flooding.

Meanwhile the reopening of the Patrick Street Bridge this weekend has been postponed due to water from Myall Creek once again submerging the bridge.  Council advises Main Roads inspectors will need to conduct a further assessment before engineers can finalise essential repairs to the damaged pylon and surface.

NZ’s Gareth Paddison Cellarbrations QLD PGA Champion

Gareth Paddison is the new Cellarbrations QLD PGA Champion following an exciting back nine showdown with playing partners Terry Pilkadaris and Kieran Pratt.

Paddison birdied the 17thand 18th holes at City Golf Club in Toowoomba to finish at 18-under and secure his third PGA Tour of Australasia title, bringing some much needed smiles to the faces of his mates back home in New Zealand.

Its nice to be able to bring a little bit of good news home… That was in the back of my mind all week as the death toll rose and the numbers kept increasing of the amount of people missing, so its nice to finish on top,” said Paddison. I feel really proud to be a New Zealander at the moment.”

But the win wasn’t without a challenge from Pilkadaris who holed two wedge shots to temporarily jolt Paddison’s confidence near the end of the round.

I did think ‘well, is this my week?”’ I’d been leading all day and then suddenly he holes a wedge shot on number 4 and then decides to hole it again. But you work so hard throughout your career to finish the way I did, and I picked up two shots at the end so its given me tremendous amounts of confidence.”

For the win Paddison took home the $17,250 prize cheque plus an exemption onto the PGA Tour of Australasia until the end of 2012.

Pilkadaris and Pratt finished in a tie for second two shots back at 16-under par. Click here for the full leaderboard.

Smith leading amateur

What a week for 17 year old amateur Cameron Smith. Smith played in the first two rounds alongside Craig Parry and  finished inside the Top 10 as the highest ranked amateur.

Every day this week I learnt something new from the guys I was playing with, it was fantastic,” said Smith. I’ve still got a lot to learn before I turn pro but this week has given me a lot of confidence.”

PGA donates $50,000 to Relief Fund

Chairman of the PGA Mark Gibson announced that the PGA would contribute $50,000 to the Australian Golf Industry Flood Disaster Relief Fund.He was speaking at the Cellarbrations QLD PGA Championship presentation, reiterating how important regional golf events are to Australia.

We’re very proud to be involved with communities at this level. The players love getting out there and showcasing their game, but one of the wonderful things that it does is that it shows the locals what great golfers are out there and inspires the next generation.”

We thank the Toowoomba community for embracing this event and hope that what we have done here this week goes a little way towards rebuilding.”

The Golf Industry Flood Disaster Relief Fund is a fund established and supported by the golf industry bodies.

Air Force Hercules Crews Take Part in Red Flag

Royal Australian Air Force Hercules crews have been using their skills in the world’s most realistic airborne exercise. From February 21 to March 15, they are participants at Exercise Red Flag 11-3 at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada, facing the world’s most comprehensive airborne warfighting simulation.

Red Flag 11-3 is coordinated by the United States Air Force and features an exercise space over 24,000 square kilometres of desert north of Las Vegas. An 88-strong Australian contingent from RAAF Base Richmond’s No. 37 Squadron are operating a pair of C-130H Hercules transport aircraft. The Hercules were supported in the transit by a C-17A Globemaster.

C-130H are each powered by four-turboprop engines and can lift up to 20-tonnes of cargo, or 92 passengers. Flying alongside fighters, surveillance aircraft and tankers, they will face the world’s most realistic simulated warzone.

Wing Commander Mark McCallum, Commanding Officer No.37 Squadron, said the C-130’s would fly tactical airlift missions at Red Flag. Despite our Squadron having a busy start to 2011 with civil aid tasking, we’ve managed to balance some intense practice for the missions we’re facing at Red Flag,” Wing Commander McCallum said. No other exercise in the world has the same level of complexity in its exercise area, and no other exercise delivers the same experience.

The Hercules will be flying day-time and night-time missions, and could drop paratroops by static-line or freefall, or land on a desert airstrip to pick up personnel. With the right escort, right tactics and teamwork amongst all the players, our crews will get through the exercise area unscathed and complete the mission successfully. It’s our chance to demonstrate our skill among the best Air Forces in the world, learn new tactics and methods of operation, and hone our skills at operating the Hercules in a high-threat environment.”

Air Force has also sent a team of eight from RAAF Base Williamtown’s No. 4 Squadron, providing close air support and tactical landing zone reconnaissance. They are also operating alongside a 20-strong team from Army’s 2 Commando Regiment.
