Police Advice on Prince William’s Motorcade Sunday 20th March

Public viewing areas and traffic closures for Royal Visit

Motorists and visitors to Ipswich, Grantham and Toowoomba on Sunday should expect road closures and delays as the royal motorcade passes through these areas. Police are urging people who wish to see the Royal Motorcade to pay close attention to road closures and designated viewing points.

Motorists and visitors to these areas will need to expect delays and remain patient when travelling on the roads or waiting for traffic to clear,”  Superintendent Joe Whyte, Toowoomba District Office said.

Police will close roads in advance of the motorcade, and reopen them once the motorcade has passed to ensure a smooth traffic flow. There are going to be delays and we advise motorists to plan early if they intend to stay for the motorcade.”

Police request people attend the public viewing areas to ensure their safety as the motorcade passes.

People who go to what police consider an unsafe area will be moved on,” Superintendent Whyte said Again we ask that people remain calm and courteous to each other and not step onto the road or place themselves in danger.”

First Model Rocket Launch for 2011 this Saturday 19th March

This Saturday, 19th March, at 1:30pm the young people of the Rangeville Space Pilots’ Club (a non-denominational Club supported by the Rangeville Community Church) and made up of young people who make flying model rockets (amongst other things) …plan to hold their first Rocket Launch of the year at the T.A.R.M.A.C. model aircraft flying field, a mere ten-minute drive south of Toowoomba and on the New England Highway. We are guests of TARMAC who, with the Space Club, invite you to come.

Through Hodgsonvale and just past “The Mill”-“The Outlook” you will see the field on your right (look for the windsock)….then just drive in. You are welcome to come and see this happen. (There are  just four ‘launches’ per year). Do bring a folding chair though.  Refreshments are available. Shelter and rest room facilities are available.

Just sit back and relax and watch the kids (young and old) excitedly, in turn, push the launch button… (the kids are under adult supervision) ..while we all count down for the launch and watch each rocket push through billowing smoke and head for the sky. It’s all fun.

Why not come along and escape from all the negative things that have plagued our lives over the past few months and just join in the positive fun of the afternoon. Importantly, there’s no charge for being there.

Come….join in the countdowns….have a ‘fun few hours’.

Barry Whisson
Launch Field Officer.

69th Anniversary of 25th Battalion’s Departure From Spring Bluff

Front: Battle of Milne Bay veterans Kev Olsen, Stan Alford & Bert Miles with Toowoomba Grammar Precision Team and (centre back) Major Robert Jenkins & Lt Col Brenda Sharp

Each year on the 17th of March, the anniversary of the soldiers’ departure from Spring Bluff in 1942,  members of the 25th Battalion gather at Spring Bluff Railway Station for a flag raising ceremony to remember the World War II service of the 25th Battalion.

However, due to the effects of flooding during the January disaster, the Spring Bluff Railway Station remains closed to the public, so this year the Milne Bay Military Museum offered their car park as a venue for the commemoration.

On St. Patrick’s Day 1942, the 1,000 strong Darling Downs 25th Infantry Battalion left Cabarlah Barracks at 2.00am and marched in darkness down the steep range to the siding at Spring Bluff.   There the soldiers boarded trains bound for the Brisbane Exhibition Grounds, Townsville and eventually Milne Bay at the eastern tip of New Guinea.

Following enemy landings, the 25th Battalion played a major role in the ensuing action (The Battle of Milne Bay), inflicting the first defeat on the until then invincible Japanese. They later took part in mop-up operations on Bougainville. Some  200 of their colleagues did not return home.
