Hospice Volunteers Recognised During Volunteeers Week

The Toowoomba Hospice held a pot luck lunch during National Volunteers Week recently which recognised the efforts of its 115 volunteers with the opportunity to say ‘One Big Thank You’.

Toowoomba Hospice Chairman Mr Graham Barron says volunteers come from all different ages, backgrounds and professions, but are united in their efforts to help the Hospice. Volunteers all actively participate, giving their skills, time and energy to support our staff in the smooth running of the Hospice.”

Mr Barron said “We appreciate our Volunteers very much and are extremely grateful for their commitment to the Hospice and this is why we like to have get togethers to show our appreciation.”

The Toowoomba Hospice is staffed around the clock by Registered Nurses and Personal Care Attendants, trained in palliative care. An enthusiastic and trained team of Volunteers support all staff in the smooth running of the Hospice and are employed in the following areas: Administration, Fundraising, Housekeeping, Courier, Kitchen (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner), Maintenance, Gardening and Floral Arrangements”.

Volunteers’ Co-ordinator Mrs Sue Beal said that Volunteering is a gift from the heart. And the Hospice appreciates all the volunteers that come through its doors each day as they are a very special part of our team.

Mrs Beal said there were a few vacancies available in the maintenance, gardening and kitchen areas due to some volunteers getting paid work and some heading off on extended holidays, as well as Fundraising (special events).

This week Darren reports on the dates and times for the next round of council meetings, the National Gallery of Australia’s training workshop for people living with dementia, design adjustments to the Jellicoe St. bridge plans, Waste Management collection services and operating hours, the NDRRA flood-repair works and the after-hours emergency number.

 

Come and See the Next Generation of Stars in Country Music.

The Annual Junior Country Music Talent Quest sponsored by Mountain Track Recording Studios and organised by Garden City Country Music Assn Inc will be held on Saturday 23rd & Sunday 24th  June at the Oakey Cultural Centre, Campbell Street, Oakey .

Competitors from south east Queensland will compete against each other in sixteen different sections (sections such as bush ballad, vocal, country rock, gospel, instrumental, group and duo).

The program commences at 8.30 a.m. Saturday morning and will conclude with the Country Rock section. Sunday performances will commence at 9.00 a.m. and conclude with our 2011 winner Helen Stewart Koster prior to the presentation to the winners.

Admission: Adults $10.00 per day, Children (13-17) – $5.00 per day, Children (5-12) – $2.00 per day and Pensioners $8.00 per day.

Toowoomba’s Model Train Exhibition June 2 and 3

The Darling Downs Model Railway Club are holding their Sedl Contractorsl Toowoomba Model Train Exhibition in the Founders Pavilion at the Toowoomba Showgrounds at Glenvale, on Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd June 2012.

Secretary Ted Freeman says “We have what I believe is a great assortment of exhibits with a little bit of something for just about everyone. Keep in mind if you come from other than Toowoomba, the weather can get chilly (always warm in the pavilion though), parking is FREE (with plenty of it) and regardless of the weather, the venue is accessible and welcoming.”

“Kid’s Korner features a large fully animated Lego Display, Baillie Boys Circus and Carnival  miniature patrons. We also have a colouring competion for the children with some great prizes from Train Pictures and The Workshops Rail Museum,” Ted said.

Although this is mainly a Model Train Exhibition, other modelling crafts have not been forgotten with the Toowoomba Scale Modellers showing their masterful models and an animated Meccano display. The ladies haven’t been forgotten either, with several craft stalls displaying, demonstrating and selling creations of several varieties.

Cancellation of Toowoomba Queensland Day Celebrations

The Queensland Day Celebrations which were to have been held in Picnic Point Park, Toowoomba from 10am to 2pm Sunday June 3rd have been cancelled. Conditions in the park were re-evaluated this morning, and on safety grounds this event has unfortunately had to be cancelled. Please pass this message along.

Change of Venue for Toowoomba’s World Environment Day Celebration

Due to forecast rain/showers, the organisers of  Toowoomba’s World Environment Day on Sunday 3rd June have made the decision to shift from Lake Annand Park to their wet weather venue, Gabbinbar State School on the corner of Mackenzie and Stenner Streets, Toowoomba.

The complete festival will be held undercover.

Patrons will still be able to enjoy the planned program of music, song and dance, speakers, stalls and children’s activities held against the backdrop of the United Nation’s World Environment Day theme of “Green Economy -  does it include you.”

Entry is free, and all are welcome.
