The Christmas Tree Festival at St Luke’s is in its 6th and final year – Christmas Tree Festival chairman Mr Stephen Buckley says there are no plans to hold the Festival again in the future. Attendances are up, and he is urging those who haven’t visited as yet to do so to experience the Toowoomba Christmas Tree Festival with over 90 decorated trees while the opportunity is there.

Queensland Rail’s Famed Silver Spike Team ‘Lays it Down’ at Highfields Pioneer Village

The Silver Spike refers to the traditional method of laying rail track. Queensland Rail, in celebrating more than 145 years of rail history dating back to the bygone era of manual tracklaying, started a competition more than 20 years ago.
‘Silver Spike Teams’ compete to see which team can lay a 13m length of track in the fastest time.

Three members of the current champion team were at Highfields Pioneer Village recently to put down rail track in front of the historic Gore Railway Station which was moved from near Inglewood and now resides at the Village.

Once the railway line is in place, Highfields Pioneer Village Volunteers will start restoring two old QR track inspection cars, a Level Crossing and a set of very old iron railway gates of historical significance. Thanks to the Silver Spike Team the track will be completed  in time for the upcoming Australia Day Celebrations at the Village on Saturday the 26th January 2013 for the enjoyment of the visitors.

Roadworks on the Warrego Highway (Toowoomba Range) This Weekend

The Department of Transport and Main Roads advises that there will be roadworks on the eastbound (down) lanes of the Warrego Highway on the Toowoomba Range from Friday 7th December for up to 10 days, as part of Operation Queenslander.

The left (slow) lane will be closed from 6pm December 7th until at least 6am Monday 9th December. Works will be 24 hours a day in this period. In the event of wet weather or other unforeseen delays, the works may extend over the following week and weekend, until 17th December.

If the time frame has to be extended, the works will occur only at night during week days, but will be 24 hours a day on the weekend of 15th and 16th December, if necessary.

The works involve trenching to enable the relocation ofcommunications conduit, backfilling, and resealing the road surface. These works will require traffic control and temporary speed reductions. Short delays are expected.

The program of works is being delivered under Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA), a joint federal and state initiative. Under these arrangements, the Australian Government provides 75% of funding, with 25% from the Queensland Government. The department is working closely with the community, local government, other government agencies and industry to reconstruct as much of the damaged transport network as quickly as possible.
