Wet Conditions Forces Cancellation Of 2013 Millmerran Show

The 76th Millmerran Show scheduled for March 2nd and 3rd has been called off except for the Pavilion Displays.

Show Society Secretary, Lyn Kirby has advised that due to water in cattle pens, stockyards etc and the general waterlogged condition of the grounds, a decision has been taken to officially cancel this years’s Show

However, the public is encouraged to visit the Pavilion displays between 9am and 3pm Saturday, March 3rd.

There are many great exhibits to be seen – cooking entries are the best in 5 years, and there are over 100 entries in the fruit and vegetable section.

A Community Service Message From AMAQ

Were you in a flood zone and feeling anxious, despondent or overwhelmed?

Are you worried about someone who is?

There’s a simple checklist for the signs that someone’s not coping such as poor sleep, drinking too much or withdrawing from social life.

In the immediate aftermath of a flood it is common for people to show signs of mental and emotional distress and, if the signs continue for five days, it could be a sign they need extra help.

The seven signs to look out for:

– Complaints of continued poor sleep
– Seeming easily overwhelmed
– Use of drugs or alcohol
– Withdrawing from family and friends
– Problems performing at work
– Startling easy or declining social invitations
– Increased or unreasonable irritability

• Find out more about the signs at www.amaq.com.au

• If you need advice or support, talk to your local GP.

• It is easy to find the closest GP using AMA Queensland’s ‘Find a Doctor’ website or iPhone app – www.amafindadoctor.com.au

Rosalie Gallery Hosting Emerging Artist Exhibition – A Single Step

Rosalie Gallery Mocatta Street, Goombungee is currently hosting an exhibition entitled A Single Step” by emerging artists Lyn Johnston, Sandra Willis & Lester Zirbel. A single step marks the beginning of every journey.” This exhibition is the first step in what the artists hope will be a long artistic adventure of joy and discovery.

The exhibition is a collaboration of realistic work in a diverse range of genres, using charcoal, graphite and soft pastel, whilst beautiful timber begs to be touched.

Lyn commenced drawing in 2011. Since then she has not looked much past graphite and charcoal due to their simplicity and their method of application in order to create different textures. . If I can get close to capturing the likeness of my subject, then I am satisfied,” said Lyn. I am trying to draw what I can see, a highlight here and shadows there.”

Lester first started making things from wood in 1975.  In those days it was from necessity, rather than a desire to create something beautiful. I had some split Silky Oak slabs from the walls of a pioneer house built circa 1900 from which I made various useful items for our home,” Lester said. Now in retirement he converts the raw materials into something beautiful as well as useful – Boxes. Matching the varieties of timbers together to get that Wow” feeling when you see the finished article is a challenge that I feel I will always be searching for,” said Lester. However it sure feels good when it is achieved .”

Sandra Willis
commenced painting in 2010. Whilst looking for art resources for her children, she discovered the online community Thinkdraw” which changed her life. As she discovered the joy of drawing, she found she was seeing everything through new eyes. She has painted portraits of children, adults, pets and wildlife, working in pastels, charcoal and graphite. “I continue to be deeply moved by the emotional responses with which my portraits are received,” said Sandra. It is a joy to capture the essence of my subjects personalities, and to know that the resulting paintings will be treasured.”

Mrs Edna Russell officially opened the exhibition on Friday 22nd February at 7.30 p.m. The exhibition will continue until 24th March. Phone the gallery on 4696 500 for further information.
