Racing Qld & Qld Government Announce Extra Prizemoney

RACING Queensland has announced a prizemoney increase for Clifford Park – part of a $15.3 million boost for the industry across Queensland.

The boost – a further $1,500-$2,000 per race per meeting – is part of Racing Queensland’s accelerated Investment Growth Plan with the Queensland Government. The Plan will benefit almost 40,000 Queensland participants, according to Racing Queensland Chairman Steve Wilson AM.

Toowoomba Turf Club Chairman Kent Woodford said he was delighted with the announcement. For many years, the Toowoomba Turf Club has been fighting for parity in prizemoney in comparison with other provincial clubs. The announcement has been widely welcomed by the TTC and reflects Racing Queensland’s commitment to Toowoomba’s racing fraternity,” Mr. Woodford said.

Grace Grace MP

Racing Minister Grace Grace said the increase was brought forward from the original plan to implement it from July 2022. The Palaszczuk Government’s continued support of racing has seen a significant increase in economic contribution across the state. With more than 12,500 Queenslanders now employed in racing – an increase of more than 1,000 over the past two years – the Queensland racing industry continues to make a significant contribution to the state’s economy,” she said.

TTC Chief Executive Officer Lizzy King said the Club was thrilled with the announcement. It’s wonderful to see the Queensland Government and Racing Queensland funnelling funding straight into grassroots racing. Any prizemoney increase is beneficial to industry participants involved in racing at Clifford Park,” Ms King said.

Toowoomba Interfaith Community Supporting Afghanistan

As you would be aware, the unfolding situation in Afghanistan is rapidly deteriorating and the country is on the verge of a devastating humanitarian catastrophe.

More than 600,000 people have been newly displaced in Afghanistan since January 2021 and this crisis will lead the new displacement within the country as well as the neighbouring countries and beyond.

The UN has warned that without a significant de-escalation in violence, Afghanistan is on course to witness the highest ever number of documented civilian casualties in a single year since the UN’s records began.

UNHCR, as part of the broader UN country team and lead in protection and emergency shelter in Afghanistan, is well prepared to stay and deliver humanitarian assistance and support to the Afghan people in a complex, dynamic and challenging security environment.

Carnival Of Joy Coming To Highfields

The Giant Kookaburra, Giant Koala and Giant Cockatoo will meet The Big Cow in Highfields on Sunday the 19th of September at 11am at Highfields Pioneer Village/
The brainchild of Dr Farvardin Daliri OAM. the Carnival of Joy is a state-wide community event celebrating community togetherness with a parade of giant Aussie iconic animal sculptures.

The parade is traveling from Brisbane to Cairns and back, visiting towns and spreading a message of joy and unity to communities along the way.
The Carnival of Joy participated in Cultural Fest on 14-15 August in Townsville in North Queensland, and the giant animals are now on their return trip.

The Carnival of Joy is a progression from Dr Farvardin Daliri OAM’s Giant Laughing Kookaburra. In 2020, after a difficult period of social isolation and distancing, thanks to the pandemic, Dr Daliri took the Giant Laughing Kookaburra, (which he sculpted during lockdown) on the road to bring communities back together and put a smile back on everyone’s faces.

The response has been overwhelming and attracted international media attention. The benefits to those communities lucky enough to receive a visit were obvious and the demand for future visits was so great that the Carnival of Joy was born.

The visit to Highfields on Sunday, September 19th will coincide with the Back to the Big Cow Concert at Highfields Pioneer Village featuring entertainment by Owen Ray and Brendon Walmsley.

There will be Mini Train Rides, Vintage Bus tours, Sausage Sizzle, Billy Tea and Damper, Tours of the Big Cow, Butter Making, Milking of the Cow, Animal Nursery, Light Horse Display, Transport Museum, Fire Engine Museum Tours, Shearing and Working Sheep Dog .

During the month of September the Village will feature a different program every day Tickets are available from the website www.highfieldspioneervillage.com.au or purchase from the entrance on the day.

Protests Put Groom MP Under Pressure

Groom MP Garth Hamilton is under pressure to keep the community safe by acting on the climate crisis. Locals will protest outside his office every Friday until November’s United Nations Climate Change COP26 Conference.

We are protesting to show how scared we are about global heating’s impact on Toowoomba’s families, economy and way of life,” Toowoomba for Climate Action spokesperson Alison Fearnley said.

CSIRO data shows by 2050 our region will have some of the worst temperature rises in Australia. This means more and more drought, life-threatening heatwaves and catastrophic fire conditions,” Ms Fearnley said. As well as this, Toowoomba’s water supply is also only guaranteed until 2049.”

One of the most important international conferences on climate change – COP26 – is being held by the United Nations in November. Australia is under significant international pressure to commit to cutting carbon pollution at this event,

A recent report scored Australia last out of 193 United Nations countries for action. “With this in mind, we have invited Mr Hamilton to speak to us about what the science says will keep us safe,” Ms Fearnley said. The Australian Climate Council says we need 75% emissions reductions below 2005 levels by 2030 and net-zero by 2035” she said. Use of fossil fuels – including gas – also needs to immediately stop to avoid catastrophic global heating,” said Ms Fearnley.

Last month United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres said the alarm bells are deafening, and the evidence is irrefutable: greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuel burning and deforestation are choking our planet and putting billions of people at immediate risk.” He added that the UN’s IPCC climate change report, released last month, must sound a death knell for coal and fossil fuels, before they destroy our planet.”

4-5pm, Fridays – 10th Sept until 12 November (last day of COP26 United Nations Climate Conference)
