Rain Delays Toowoomba Range Traffic Switch

The Department of Transport and Main Roads advises that recent wet weather has delayed the planned closure of the left lane and a switch to the right lane of the eastbound (down) lanes of the Warrego Highway on the Toowoomba Range.

The switch to the right lane will now occur next Tuesday (19 November), instead of Sunday as planned. The switch to the right lane will enable the connection of the down lanes to a 300m long bitumen side track, which will be opened next to the existing down lanes.

Motorists are reminded that barriers will be moved, line marking will change and there will be new signage on the down lanes leading to the side track. A section of the side track will be steeper than the existing down lanes. Heavy vehicle operators are to use only low gears when using the side track to ensure their safety and the safety of other motorists.

There will be night works on the Toowoomba Range affecting both the eastbound and westbound lanes.

Upon completion of the lane switch on the eastbound section, there will be works in the existing left lane including pavement reconstruction, asphalt profiling and drainage works. Night works affecting the westbound lanes will include the commencement of landscaping on the western batter slopes. Changed traffic conditions between 6pm and 6am include strict lane width restrictions to allow for safe completion of the activities.

Operators of heavy vehicles are reminded that restrictions apply on both eastbound and westbound lanes between 6pm and 6am: loads with ground contact width greater than 2.5m loads with an overall width greater than 3.5m loads with an overall length greater than 26m.

Operators are reminded that any load exceeding these dimensions should be registered with the project team 48 hours prior to arrival. If not, the vehicle will be stopped at the saddle of the Toowoomba Range by the Queensland Police Service. Full conditions and contact details are listed on the TMR Wide Load Permit Database.

Eligible reconstruction works under Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA) are funded 75% by the Australian Government and 25% from the Queensland Government.

For up-to-date information on changed traffic conditions visit www.131940.qld.gov.au or call 13 19 40.

Queensland Remembers on 11th Day of 11th Month

RSL (Queensland Branch) is encouraging the community and Defence veterans to acknowledge one of the most solemn days on the national calendar – Remembrance Day, when World War 1 was declared over.

As Australia’s military operation in Afghanistan draws to an end, it is an opportune time to reflect on the sacrifices made by all service personnel in conflicts past and present. RSL (Queensland Branch) CEO Chris McHugh CSC said while Remembrance Day recalls a declaration of peace 95 years ago, it sadly did not signify an end to conflict.

40 Australian soldiers have been killed on duty in Afghanistan and 261 wounded including two sailors and one airman,” Mr McHugh said. Many more are coming home from service with psychological scars and whole communities are dealing with the social and financial impacts of deployment.

At 11am this Monday, please join your local service and spare a thought for those who’ve made such great sacrifice.”

Veterans, families and supporters, ADF personnel and dignitaries will gather at Brisbane’s ANZAC Square for one of 139 RSL Remembrance Day services across Queensland

The book “A Breathing Space for the People: Newtown Park 1913-2013” by Regina Albion and Lorraine Schiller details the fascinating history of the park and will be available for purchase during the celebrations.

The original (but refurbished) spade  used by Mayor Hagan of Newtown Town Council to plant a tree in the park in 1913 will be on display during the event.

Cr Sue Englart  said it was important to acknowledge the significant role the park has played in Newtown’s history.  “The land was originally purchased as a ‘breathing space’ for citizens in 1913,” Cr Englart said. “Since then, Newtown Park has certainly fulfilled its purpose.

“It has hosted vital World War 1 and 2 activities, been used by many different sporting and community groups, and been the source of great enjoyment for local green thumbs, tourists and countless young people who have grown up in the shade of its beautiful trees.

“I encourage everyone to come along and help us celebrate this beautiful park on its special day, Sunday November 3rd.”

Toowoomba Regional Council received a State Government grant of $100,000 for a centennial monument within the park and set aside $236,032 in Council’s budget for improvements within Newtown Park to prepare it for the Centenary celebrations. A new flagpole and lighting at the plinth has been erected this year to commemorate the Centenary.
