New Firefighting Water Tanks For Crows Nest

Three new water tanks have been installed in the Crows Nest area as part of Toowoomba Regional Council’s push to build resilience and natural disaster preparedness in the region.

The tanks roll-out and installation are part of $63,000 in funding secured by Council under the Queensland Government’s four year strategy – Get Ready Queensland. The theme for the Get Ready Queensland is ‘Local solutions to local issues’.

New poly tanks have been installed at Cooyar on the Mt Binga and Rangeview roads, with a third tank on the Old New England Highway. Three additional concrete tanks will also be installed in Crows Nest and Millmerran Estates areas. Millmerran Airport has already had a water tank installed to assist with aerial water bombing operations.

All the tanks will be easily identifiable and will be badged with the Toowoomba Regional Council, Rural Fire Service Queensland and the Queensland Fire Emergency Services logos.

Toowoomba Region Mayor Paul Antonio said “These funds had to be targeted at activities that make a demonstrable difference to resilience within our communities. The tanks will supplement water supplies during any future bush firefighting operations by eliminating the time needed to return to town to ‘top up’ their trucks”.

Join In Qld Day celebrations In Toowoomba CBD June 1st

Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) and City Heart Toowoomba, backed by the Toowoomba Chamber of Commerce and Industry, are keen to tap into the Maroon spirit for a fun, family festival to mark Queensland Day on Sunday, June 1st.

This year’s Toowoomba celebrations are moving from Picnic Point to Toowoomba’s CBD in Margaret Street, between Neil and Ruthven streets, from 8am to 2pm in the midst of the Markets.

TRC Tourism and Events portfolio leader Cr Geoff McDonald said Council was pleased to team with City Heart Toowoomba to bring a festive atmosphere to the city’s CBD. There will be a flag raising ceremony and a range of entertainers, Cr McDonald said. “All the popular market stalls will operate with additional children’s rides and competitions in Margaret Street.”

He said “Prizes will be offered for the best Queensland Day outfit for boys and girls in primary and secondary school age categories and children will be able to enjoy free rides on the spinning pots and the traditional carousel. The Margaret Street Markets have been a welcome monthly addition to CBD activity on Sunday mornings and I’m sure the Queensland Day atmosphere will see a bumper crowd enjoying the day.”

Toowoomba Regional Mayor Paul Antonio is encouraging residents to show their state pride and celebrate the great attributes of the Sunshine State on June 1. “Queensland Day is one of the few public occasions on which everyone is invited to celebrate the good fortune of living and working in Queensland and especially across the Toowoomba region,” Cr Antonio said. “This is one way to join a family day out to mark Queensland’s founding and to show your pride in being a Queenslander.”

2014 Tenthill Turnout – Stan Coster Tribute On Saturday 24th May

The Annual Tenthill Turnout is on again this year on Saturday the 24th May 7.00pm at Ma Ma Creek Hall, via Gatton Qld. It will be the 17th memorial concert to celebrate and pay tribute to Stan Coster, the music and the man.

This year’s show features the gentle giant himself, Reg Poole OAM, funnyman Terry Gordon OAM, Johnny Greenwood, Chris Pritchard, local artists John Colville and Primrose Henderson, Gordon Larkin, Pixie Jenkins, Errol Gray, Steve Newton and Stan’s daughter, Tracy.. A veritable feast of country music…

Event coordinator, Kevin Perks says “It was fantastic to see so many people come and support the night in 2013 and we are hoping for yet another record crowd this year. Stan Coster was in my opinion, the finest bush ballad songwriter this country has ever seen, and I feel very strongly that his music and heritage should be preserved. So we came up with the idea to hold a tribute concert in Stan’s honour, each May on the Saturday closest to the day he was born in 1930, May 27th.”
Tenthill Turnout 2014 posterStan had a real affinity with the people in the Tenthill district, so many of the folks from around the area became good friends of the Coster’s

Arnie Schulz was one of those folks, Stan first met Arnie in the late eighties and they got along really well, at the time Arnie mentioned to Stan that there was a mountain, near Ropely, that he one day hoped to buy. From that conversation, Stan wrote the song, “Shulzies’ Mountain”, for Arnie, so that song is really quite special to folks around Tenthill. Arnie has since passed away and he will be sorely missed.

The Stan Coster Show, first started playing the Tenthill Hotel, back in the eighties and the crowd swelled to the point that the pub couldn’t hold the people, so every year on their annual tour, the Costers would play at the pub on Saturday night, then the following morning Stan, Dottie, Tracy and the whole band would head up to Shulzies mountain. There they would meet up with around 100 or so locals for a barbeque and a yarn with Shulzie. From there everyone would head on back down the mountain to get spruced up for a Sunday afternoon show at the pub.

So, now every year Tracy Coster makes the pilgrimage up to Ma Ma Creek Hall to host the night that honors her Dad, “I have really fond memories of playing at the pub, and heading up the mountain, I’m not exactly what you’d call a great horsewoman, but I remember one year we all rode up the mountain and Arnie picked out this really big quiet old horse called Moby for me and I rode him up the mountain alongside my Dad. The view is amazing from up there!”

Tracy says “It’s interesting how the Tenthill Turnout came about, you see after Dad passed away, long time friend and country music enthusiast, Kevin Perks, and a few locals got together, to form the Lockyer/ Darling Downs, Stan Coster Memorial Committee, with the intent to erect two memorial plaques to honour Dad. One in the car park area of the Tenthill hotel, and one in Centenary Park at Clifton.

To raise the funds necessary to erect the memorials it was decided to have a concert just over the range at the local hall, in the little town of Nobby. This was back in 1998. Many up and coming bush balladeers offered to help out with the show, and gave of their time voluntarily. In time, the money was raised, and the plaques were erected in 2000. The show was so popular it was decided to make the Tenthill Turnout an annual tribute concert.
The Tenthill Turnout will be held at the Ma Ma Creek Hall via Gatton QLD.
on Saturday the 24th of May from 7.00pm. Tickets available at the Ma Ma Creek Store,

Celebrate The Good Life In The High Country At 2014 Hampton Food And Arts Festival

Hampton Festival
The tiny village of Hampton between Cabarlah and Crow’s Nest north of Toowoomba will come alive on Sunday 18 May for the annual Hampton Festival, showcasing the fantastic local produce, food producers and artists of the region.

Special guest chefs are Matt Golinski and Sally Lynch who will be using the local produce to create tempting culinary delights. Matt Golinski is a highly regarded Australian chef with a passion for simple, lightly spiced, yet flavour-packed food based on seasonal, fresh local ingredients.

In late 2011, a fire in the Golinski family home tragically claimed the lives of Matt’s wife Rachael and their three daughters, Starlia, Willow and Sage. The blaze left Matt fighting for his life with third degree burns to over 40% of his body. Matt has made extraordinary progress with his recovery. Although Matt requires further surgery before returning to a commercial kitchen he enjoys a busy schedule of cooking demonstrations and public speaking engagements.

Sally Lynch has been in the Food “game” for 25 years. She has cooked for the rich and famous as well as people down on their luck. One thing she has discovered is that our love for good tasty food surpasses social and economic barriers †everyone loves it, eats it, talks it and has fond memories relating to it!

Sally has worked with and for some of the biggest names in the business. She has been lucky enough to travel Spain with Frank Camora, cooked for Olivia Newton John, cooked for the Packers at their Polo property, the Pratts at their famous Raheen parties, and much of the Melbourne establishment. Sally has cooked for the big bands such as Powderfinger, Sting, Silverchair, Lily Allen, Dave Grohl and so many more. The Wiggles, Reg Grundy, fashion designers and actors…cooking has enabled Sally to travel the world.

Along list of talented musicians will light up Hampton’s main stage! Dana Hassall, Bob Grant and the Lost Mountain Preachers are just several of the great acts performing this year.

The arts precinct will host the Hampton Art Exhibition, celebrating artists who live within 50kms radius of Hampton, as well as interactive displays including a body painter and live painting ‘battles’.

The festival runs from 9.30am-4pm and entry costs apply. Fore more information call 4697 9066.

Flood Reconstruction Of Dalby Area Roads And Highways In 2014

Following consecutive summers of damage to our road network across Queensland, several roads in the Darling Downs region were affected by flooding and heavy rainfall in early 2013.

The Department of Transport and Main Roads advises additional flood reconstruction works will be undertaken on the Bunya and Moonie Highways, and Dalby Cooyar Road. A section the Bunya Highway repairs will be located in Dalby, between North and Horace Street intersections.

During these works, some temporary changes to driveway access will be required; the project team will notify residents affected by any changes in advance. These works in the town of Dalby are expected to commence the week starting 12 May 2014 and take up to two weeks to complete.

Following these repairs, the following package of works will be delivered in the Dalby area, delivering 5.6km of pavement and culvert repairs.
Moonie Highway, starting near Fowlers Road and extending south for 2km
Bunya Highway, near the intersection with Pirrinuan-Malakoff Road
Dalby-Cooyar Road, 3km east of the intersection with the Bunya Highway
Dalby-Cooyar Road, between the intersections with Mallings Road and Pechey-Maclagan Road, east of Kaimkillenbun.
This works package is expected be completed by November 2014, weather permitting.

These works will require lane closures and changes to traffic conditions. Motorists should drive to the changed conditions and obey all signage for their own safety and the safety of road workers. Restrictions may be in place for operators of oversized and heavy vehicles. Conditions are available from the Heavy Vehicle Industry Road Report, which can be viewed online through the 13 19 40 Traffic and Travel Information website at www.131940.qld.gov.au or on calling 13 19 40.

For more information on flood-related roadworks in the Darling Downs area, contact TMR on 1800 063 397 between 8am and 5pm, Monday to Friday or email reconstruct_darlingdowns@tmr.qld.gov.au. Alternatively, you can contact the Queensland Government’s 24/7 number 13QGOV (137468).
You can also visit the Reconstructing Darling Downs page on the Department of Transport and Main Roads web site for more information on the full range of flood-reconstruction projects.

Eligible reconstruction works on this project will be funded under the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements. Under these arrangements, the Australian Government provides up to 75 per cent of the funding, with 25 per cent from the Queensland Government.

National Volunteers Week 12-18 May 2014

Lifeline Darling Downs and S W Queensland Staff and Volunteers
Lifeline Darling Downs and S W Queensland Staff and Volunteers

Lifeline Darling Downs and South West Queensland Limited in conjunction with Lifeline Australia are proud to be a part of National Volunteers Week 2014. National Volunteers Week is where the efforts of Volunteers are recognised, not only for their assistance with the programs that Lifeline Darling Downs and other organisations coordinate, but also the power that their work has in the community.

National Volunteers Week recognises the efforts of Lifeline Darling Downs Volunteers with nearly 400 volunteers, working in our retail stores, at events such as Bookfest and many others that are run through the community. It also recognises the efforts of the volunteers who put their own worries and concerns aside when natural disaster strikes, often leaving their own devastated homes to help others rebuild or clean up theirs.

It is time we recognise their achievements and raise the awareness about the excellent work these people are doing.

Being a Lifeline Volunteer isn’t just about getting out there and asking for donations, it is about helping out at National, Regional and Local events; it is working in the retail stores or on the distribution centre floor, organising the clothes, books, and home wares; it is about being able to help in any way you can.

According to Volunteer Australia (www.volunteeraustralia.org) the average age group for volunteers in Australia  in 2010 was 45-54 years . Of the 6.1 million volunteers, registered in 2010, 593,700 people were aged 18-24. This means that young people are more and more becoming a part of the volunteering community. *

Why not become a part of this great effort by so many Australians and volunteer today or donate to www.lifelinedarlingdowns.org.au/  .
