Ludwig Leichardt School Art Competition Winners

Following the receipt of more than 600 entries from schools across Queensland in the Ludwig Leichhardt 200th Anniversary Art Competition the winners were announced yesterday at the Schlencker Centre in Rockhampton.

Rockhampton locals and devotees of Ludwig Leichhardt, Rod Schlencker and artist Bill Gannon, were joined by Queensland LNP Senator, Sue Boyce, in the difficult process of picking the winners.

We have been absolutely swamped with the most wonderful and imaginative drawings, artwork and essays from the 710 primary and secondary schools across Queensland that were invited to participate, Senator Boyce said.

The winners are:

Secondary School Essay:

First: Joshua Liaw, Tannum Sands State High School. Second: Phyllida Hayes, Toowoomba State High School. Third: Rhys Pruden, William Ross State High School, Townsville. Highly Commended: Shae-Kia Carroll, Hughenden State School.

Mainstream Primary School Drawing Competition

First: Mia Barram aged 8, from the Dysart State Primary School. Runner-up was Esen Abraham, 11, from St Rita’s Catholic Primary School, South Johnstone near Innisfail and third prize went to Emily Reynolds, 9, from the Emerald State Primary School.

Highly Commended: Kali Woods, Cairns School of Distance Education, Naomi Hughes, Crows Nest State Primary School, Zach Buckley, Stanthorpe State Primary School, Ayden Mays, Mareeba State School, Isabel Morris, Mareeba State School, Tom Graham, Taroom State School,

Ally Graham, Taroom State School, Angus Johns, Taroom State School.

In the category for Special Needs Primary School:

First: William Butler, aged 9, from the Kennedy State School north of Cardwell, Kieran Singh, 11, also from the Kennedy School was runner-up and Clinton Craig, 11 from Wyreema State Primary School, outside Toowoomba, came third.

Highly Commended: Emma-Bree Lye aged 8, from Rockhampton Girls Grammar

A special prize for Best School Performance went to the Taroom State Primary School who sent in dozens of entries on the Leichhardt theme, all gift wrapped in leaves.

Ludwig Leichhardt was one of Australia’s most extraordinary explorers who contributed enormously to Queensland’s history, and the 200th anniversary of his birth on October 22 this year will be marked by a host of events both here and in his native Germany.
