Search For Missing Man, Maidenwell

Police have recovered the body of a man missing near Maidenwell.

coomba-fallsOfficers were called to the Coomba Falls around 2.15pm on Sunday after a man at the waterhole jumped from a rock into the water and failed to resurface. A preliminary search by nearby swimmers and police and other emergency services on the Sunday afternoon failed to locate the man.

Police guarded the scene overnight and resumed the search on Monday morning.

Specialist dive squad police from Brisbane arrived at Coomba Falls around 10am and recovered the body of a young Highfields man.

Anyone with information which could assist with this matter should contact Crime Stoppers anonymously via 1800 333 000 or crimestoppers.com.au 24hrs a day. Crime Stoppers is a registered charity and community volunteer organisation working in partnership with the Queensland Police Service.

Pittsworth On Show For Spring

The town of Pittsworth  in the heart of the Darling Downs (45 kms southwest of Toowoomba down the Gore Highway) is engaged in the annual celebration of Spring with a number of events through the week and especially  on the 7th, 8th and 9th of October. One of the main attractions is the Craft & Fine Food Spectacular (see below).

However, there are also Spring Competition Gardens to visit, the Pittsworth Art Group’s Spring Art Exhibition (Short Street), a Quilt showing (School of Arts building) and on Sunday morning the Pulse and Pain Fun Run.

barbara-lanhamPittsworth Art Group president, Barbara Lanham, reports the Group is going from strength to strength with 14 new members joining this year, bringing the total membership to 28.

The 16th annual Spring Art Exhibition is continuing to 4pm on Sunday, 9th October with 144 paintings on display, as well as pottery and woodwork. The exhibition was officially opened this year by Pamela Armstrong, Manager, Library and Cultural Services, Toowoomba Regional Council.

The Pittsworth Art Group invites tutors for workshops, and John Wilson from Katoomba  visits for a 2 day oils workshop each year.

Graham W. Smith has tutored in acrylics, Karol Oakley in pastels, Cess Sliedrecht in pen and wash and Robert Lovett in watercolour.

Enjoy a visual display photographs from Winning Entries from the 2015 Toowoomba Open House Photographic Competition.  A selection of favourites from previous years will also be on display.  Demonstrations will be held on how to repair old photographs as well as a display of camera -old and new.

This Get Bold Not Old initiative is part of an ongoing campaign by Feros Care to show that age is just a number, and that our older community members are larger than life.pat-bold-not-oldJennene Buckley, CEO of Feros Care said that while #GetBoldNotOld has a fun side, its real objective is to shine a spotlight on negativity around ageing.

“There are real issues faced by seniors, from feeling invisible in their community, health and mobility issues, social isolation, financial hardship and elder abuse. In fact, a recent study by Brigham Young University shows that there is an increased risk of death for people who are lonely and socially isolated.[1]

“You don’t suddenly become invisible when you reach 70, or 80 or 90. Society often forgets that today’s 84 year old nana was yesterday’s rebel, with a life full of wonderful stories, experiences and probably even some secrets,” she said.

#GetBoldNotOld is an exaggerated campaign designed to bring out the cheeky in our older generations.

Families and carers of children with autism have the opportunity to find out how AEIOU Foundation is creating brighter futures by attending an open day at the Toowoomba centre  on Wednesday, 12th October.

The event will provide insight into AEIOU’s early intervention autism-specific program, and is the perfect chance to see the program in action, meet our qualified staff and ask questions.

AEIOU is one of Australia’s largest providers of early intervention for children with autism. Our evidence- based program meets the Australian Guidelines for Good Practice 2012 and is underpinned by a transdisciplinary team of therapists and educators.

Camp Oven Festival A Major Regional Event

What started as a little friendly competition around the campfire has grown to become one of Queensland’s flagship tourism events.

The biennial Australian Camp Oven Festival will celebrate its 10th birthday when it is held on October 1 and 2 in Millmerran, Queensland.

The brainchild of outback icons Gary Fogarty and Ned Winter, the event has grown from its humble beginnings in 1999 and is now a major regional event.

Over just two days, the small township of Millmerran’s population will swell from just 1,200 residents to over 7,000 people as travellers come from all over Australia to attend the Festival.

The event’s quirky program celebrates authentic Aussie traditions including camp oven cooking, damper throwing, billy boiling, bush poetry, shearing demonstrations and bush craft displays.sara-storer

This year’s feature performer will be country music darling and Golden Guitar winner, Sara Storer.

Event organiser, Katrina Grundon, advised it took over 2,000 volunteer hours to make the Festival a reality. “The logistics are really quite amazing.  By the end of the Festival, our cooking area would have used over 700kg of meat, 300kg of flour and 200kg of potatoes.”

“In addition to feeding the masses, we also have to house them! Most bring their caravan or tent and stay in the area for a while so there’s a really lovely community atmosphere here over the weekend.”

“We think our event is a great way to showcase the region and encourage visitors to enjoy the slower pace of country life.”

The Australian Camp Oven Festival will be held on October 1 and 2 at the Millmerran Showgrounds.  Tickets for the event are available via www.acof.com.au

Established in 1978 the Toowoomba FX FJ Holdens Club has a proud history of over 36 years in Toowoomba and surrounding areas. Each year the club holds South East Queensland’s largest All Holden Day and Swap Meet to celebrate and showcase the preservation and restoration of early model  Holden’s.

The two day event attracts hundreds of Holden enthusiasts and dedicated exhibitors and forms the major fund raising event for the club, enabling the continuation of a Toowoomba tradition.

Toowoomba FXFJ Holdens Club are seeking your support for the upcoming 31st All Holden Day and Swap Meet. Last years event attracted over 250 entries and record crowd numbers.
