September 15 Day Of Prayer

0

A regional day of prayer on Sunday, September 15th has been organised as a show of support for drought-affected communities across southern Queensland.

Toowoomba Region Mayor Paul Antonio said a particularly dry autumn and winter had compounded another dry summer, which was testing the resolve of primary producers and communities across a large part of Queensland and much of the country.

“The day of prayer is a concerted effort to show our region’s concern and support for all residents, their families and business people who are battling the drought,” Mayor Antonio said.

“The day is designed for all faiths to incorporate a prayer in their regular services to show they care for people whose livelihoods are being determined largely by the elements.

“We can show our genuine concern and offer hope for a break in the season. A prayer for fellow residents’ welfare is a fitting act of kindness. It is a difficult time for many people across regional Queensland.”

“Apart from financial strains there is a toll on people’s mental health, which we must openly address. Producers and rural people are by nature a most resourceful group, but the ongoing drought causes many flow-on effects in our communities that are far beyond their control. We can support each other through thick and thin times.”

“We need to help all residents understand where our food and fibre is produced and how hard our primary producers and supporting businesses work to sustain us all year round.

“This is our turn to recognise their hard work and passion for living and working on the land.

“Our simple prayer is for widespread rain to break the drought and restore people’s spirits and livelihoods.”

Mayor Antonio said the day was supported by the Darling Downs and South West Queensland Council of Mayors and the wider Toowoomba church community.

Toowoomba For Climate Action Petition Handover

AN OPEN LETTER:

Dear Toowoomba Councillors, Political Representatives and Media Organisations,

Toowoomba Regional Council will next week have to respond to a petition from a local grassroots organisation that’s calling for the creation of a Climate Change Advisory Committee.

Toowoomba for Climate Action (T4CA) has collected more than 1,000 signatures from the community, and will deliver the petition to Councillor Geoff McDonald on Monday morning, Monday 16th September at 8.30am in front of City Hall

Spokesperson Linda Harper said “we have collected signatures from people of all ages and walks of life who supportforming a committee to build on the work council is already doing to move to a clean energy future and respond to increasingly unstable weather patterns.”

Ms Harper said support for renewable energy, as well as the current drought, above average temperatures, fire risk and water shortages were key reasons people thought the formation of the committee was necessary.

“TRC’s 2019 Planning Scheme Review states that due to climate change our region can expect “higher temperatures, hotter and more frequent hot days, harsher fire weather, more intense downpours and less annual rainfall.” A Climate Change Advisory Committee would be a positive next step from identifying the problem to implementing budgeted council wide responses that suit our local community.”

“In addition, the United Nations Development program estimates more than 70% of emissions reduction measures and up to 90% of climate change adaptation measures are undertaken by local governments. This demonstrates how important TRC will be in preparing our region for the changes ahead as well as doing our part in the global effort to reduce emissions.”

The delivery of the petition comes in the same week as hundreds are expected to gather in front of Toowoomba City Hall to participate in the Global Climate Strike march. On Friday September 20th, people all around the world will strike to demand urgent action from governments at all levels on the current climate crisis. Toowoomba for Climate Action is supporting students from six local schools with the planning of this all ages event.

More details on the Global Climate Strike event:

Fri 20 Sept – Toowoomba Global Climate Strike March

Where & When: Meet at 1.45pm at Toowoomba City Hall, cnr Ruthven and Herries St for a march.
What: All ages needed and welcome. To everyone who cares about a safe climate future, this is your invitation to join the Global#ClimateStrike on September 20 – with people around the world standing up to confront the climate crisis when our politicians won’t.

Air Force To Commence Attack Training

The Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) will commence EA-18G Growler Airborne Electronic Attack training across South-West Queensland and North-West New South Wales in September.

Crews will fly training missions against simulated threats produced by the Mobile Threat Training Emitter System (MTTES) and Advanced Mobile Threat Training Emitter System (ADVMTTES).

Officer Commanding No 82 Wing, Group Captain Stephen Chappell, said MTTES and ADVMTTES threat simulators would be deployed at locations across Air Force’s 40,000 kilometres squared Western Training Area.

“The truck and trailer-based systems will provide realistic training simulations and allow EA-18G Growler aircrew to practice detecting, identifying and locating electronic threats,” Group Captain Chappell said.

“Up to five mobile emitter systems will be active across the training area during each flight. The EA-18G Growler aircrew will locate them from approximately six kilometres above the ground.

“This training is vital to Air Force operations and is a key component of day-to-day training for EA-18G Growler aircrew.”

Six sites have been established on Queensland Government managed land, with additional locations being identified from Toowoomba and Warwick in the east, up to Roma in the north-west and down to Moree in North-West NSW.

“We hope local land holders and land managers will be able to assist with identifying additional training locations, providing our aircrews with more diverse training situations to enhance Air Force capability,” Group Captain Chappell said.

Potential sites are subject to stringent environmental assessment to ensure suitability and to mitigate any potential environmental impact.

On Saturday the 21st of September at 10am a brand-new attraction will open its doors at Highfields Pioneer Village, the Bushranger Café will serve amazing coffees, milkshakes and grilled sandwiches with a twist; all named after Australia’s infamous bushrangers.

The new café will be open to the public every day from 10am to 4pm. Remembering The Battle of One Tree Hill

This Friday, we remember a key event in Queensland’s colonial history. For the fifth consecutive year Toowoomba residents will gather to mark the anniversary of the Battle of One Tree Hill. This battle occurred 176 years ago and it was a critical moment in the more than five years of fierce resistance led by local Warrior Multuggerah.

“Remembering the courage and resilience of Multuggerah and his fighters as they sought to protect their country helps us have a truer sense of our local history,” stated Dr David Tutty, one of the organisers and a member of the group, Friends of Multuggerah.

As organisers, we see that commemorating the battle and Multuggerah’s resistance is necessary in understanding how we can respectfully work towards a more just future.

This year we have Rev’d Dr Ray Barraclough speaking on “There are no exits from history”. Rev’d Barraclough is a retired Biblical scholar who sees the need to engage with and face all parts of our Australian history, even the most difficult of past events.

Our commemoration will also acknowledge Uncle Darby McCarthy’s contributions and launch local historians Dr Ray Kerkhove and Frank Uhr’s book “The Battle of One Tree Hill”.

Date: Friday September 13th

Time: Midday
